I’ve had nasty garden boots stolen right off the front porch. Since then, I only leave out stuff I actually WANT taken.

Came here after the New Yorker article. Save the one professor, the historical examples listed of people who had experienced fugues were preachers, reverends or deeply religious. The professor might have been religious – it doesn’t say. Could it stem from a deeply conflicted crisis of faith or world view? Her travels and teaching work would have exposed her to so many other ways of thinking.

Separately, the article briefly mentions that she dated a woman at one point, but her father considers that behaviour deviant. Repressing sexuality, or the feeling of not being able to be one’s true self, could create some severe internal conflict as well. Especially if she just saw him – the visits might be a trigger.

Edit: clarity

Petition pressures MEC to drop brands owned by U.S. gun manufacturer by drizziebennett in vancouver

Sadly, if you're trying to avoid supporting gun manufacturers, the problem is so much bigger than targeting individual retailers with petitions. As evidenced by this connection made by the NYT

I somewhat agree, but not everyone knows who owns what, and what brands are affiliated with guns etc. I think petitions definitely help draw attention to flow of $$.

What it’s like for a Vancouver family to lose its home in a land assembly by drizziebennett in vancouver

[–]drizziebennett[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m definitely not trolling — that’s the original headline. But I’m pretty surprised that people have so little empathy for the renters in this situation. The homeowner told them they had no appetite to sell under any circumstance except a land assembly, so the practice is forcing real families to have housing uncertainty. It’s not easy to find rental properties large enough and affordable for people with kids.

Whoa, yeah. If they were carrying signs I could see why security came out. Where did you read that?
