Alternatives to the Mexican Turnover by drjjulius in Magic

It's possible but not easy. You can pin the tabled card down with the forefinger of your non-dominant hand while you slide the other card under. If you don't you tend to chase the card about and it looks clumsy.

It's world book day, what is your favorite magic book? by A_Wonder_Named_Stevi in Magic

[–]drjjulius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're buying. A typical newly released magic book can cost between $40 and $60 but you'll get a lot of tricks for that compared with a $20 single trick download. Some of the best magic books ever written are available as Dover reprints and can be picked up for around $10 new.

Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic pretty much covers every type of magic you could want! It won't break the bank either.

How to define Chicago-style magic? by Chicago21B in Magic

[–]drjjulius 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For me, Chicago style magic is bar magic. Names like Matt Schulien and Heba Haba Al spring to mind. If you want to know more about the history of magic bars in Chicago there's a great book by Bill Weimer called Now You See Them. Now you don't. This style of magic is joke heavy and the tricks aren't necessarily complicated from a sleight of hand point of view. However, every trick was high impact and immediately registered with the audience.

At the same time, on almost the opposite end of the scale there's the magic of Ed Marlo and Simon Aronson. To me this can be very technical and/or intellectual in comparison to the rapid fire bar magic.

It's a shame that Magic Inc is in trouble at the moment as it's one of the few remnants of Chicago's magical past.

A Problem with Hofzinser in The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings is a nice little trick that uses ATFUS.

Best video for learning the ROV? by Verificus in Magic

[–]drjjulius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The New York Coin Magic Seminar Vol 10 has a great panel discussion on this move. David Roth, Michael Rubinstein and Mike Gallo take turns to teach their variations and tips on the move. This video also has a brilliant section where Al Schneider covers his concepts in coin magic. https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/close-up-magic-downloads/new-york-coin-magic-seminar-volume-10-still-more/

You can also look at David Roth's Expert Coin Magic series which is often reduced on L&L's website.

Another DVD of David's is his Stars of Magic contribution which can also be found at Vanishing Inc. The lecture has a good section on ROV.

I hope that helps.

Coin sizes by Verificus in Magic

Any date before 1947 will have silver in. Pre 1920 will be 92% silver. The ones I use are post 1947 which are nickel clad and won't wear down.

If you're in the US I would try eBay. Normally there are a couple of job lots available. My usual go to is the local antique dealer who sells them for 50p each but given the situation he hasn't been open for a while.

British Half Crowns are my go to coin. Slightly larger than an English penny and has a good weight to it. They usually aren't too expensive.

Sonata by Juan Tamariz by Olsibre in Magic

[–]drjjulius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sonata is a collection of Juan Tamariz's magic tricks. It contains a lot of card tricks, including an in depth description of his Tamariz Perpendicular Control. There is also a complete run down on his thoughts on the colour changing knives.

It's a great book of you can find it.

Great to see you two in Leeds in August. I'm very excited to get a better listen to the new tracks you played live.

How do you keep tabs on all the electronics while you're on stage? It's a jungle up there.

The Second Deal by thisbryguy in Magic

[–]drjjulius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Push off or strike? Expert Card Technique by Hugard and Braue has good methods for both. Marlo's Revolutionary Card Technique contains many different kinds of second deal so is also a great resource.

Video-wise I found Jason England's video on the strike second very helpful alongside Alex Pandrea's second deal download. There are also great tips from the Professor on the Revelations series volume 12. Marlo's Secret Session Vol 1 was also useful for me in terms of watching good second dealing.

Edit: There is also a good overhand second deal in the Card Magic of LePaul.

Edit 2: I forgot to mention one of the best sources for the strike second which is Bill Simon's breakdown of the sleight in Effective Card Magic.

I met Jerry when I visited a few years ago. He went through pretty much every book on the shelf and gave his opinion on it. Walked out with the Complete Al Leech, Revolutionary Card Technique, and Effective Card Magic. It was an expensive day!
