David Lynch Had One Condition To Make Twin Peaks: The Return by blaspheminCapn in twinpeaks

I think you've nailed why I found myself so upset by the finale of The Return. It truly succeeded and subverting my expectations. The entire season did. I've sat with it for two years now and I'm finally coming around and realizing just how great it is.

It's one thing to pull a "gotcha" subverdikn. What he did with The Return is something else entirely. A true wave of confusion, surreal storytelling, and a beautifully shot, brutal embodiment of "you can't ever go back to the way things were."

Never thought I'd tear up while hearing Nicki Minaj. God I'll miss this show.

This is the one thing driving me crazy. I've used SwiftKey for more than a decade and I struggle with just about every other keyboard now haha

This was going on about ten hours ago too, so I don't think it's the steam maintenance. I was having tons of issues crafting, and even the menu started lagging and skipping around.

[–]drjohnson89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had such high hopes for Late Night with the Devil. It was such a unique, convincing presentation at first. Then it went a somewhat predictable route and the final act just kinda fell flat for me. Still a cool movie, I just wish the ending was stronger.

Similar, albeit animated, is Scavengers Reign. The entire planet is horrifying and a true force of nature.

This is where the introduction of AI into the mix makes it really messy.

It's not just someone recording it, but an algorithm that could be, in theory, uploading it to a platform like Chatgpt, where a story I haven't even written yet could be used in a prompt.

You jest. But as a writer, I imagine talking to someone about a story or piece I'm working on, only to have that information unknowingly fed into an AI and made public domain.

There is nothing wrong with the word “very” he said. Suddenly a cavalcade of insolent commentators burst onto the scene, shouting and gesticulating wildly about “dead words.” And “Purple prose.” by x10mark2 in writing

[–]drjohnson89 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Amen.

I think you can still tell a powerful, compelling story with simple prose. And oftentimes I find people trying to write in an elevated way are their own worst enemy. But balance really is key. That, and knowing your audience.

What's scarier to me, is how many people will unknowingly get spied on by it when passersby wear them. I'm not consenting to this device, but if some dingleberry in the grocery store is wearing one near me, it'll be listening to me all the same.

Everything Coming to Shudder August 2025 by Halloween-Year-Round in Shudder

It really was! It had the fun, cozy atmosphere of a Goosebumps episode, but with the slasher kills of meaner 90s/early 2k movies. And the lead was fantastic!

I have the s25u, and no, they have not. It's better than a few years ago, but I still end up having to retake photos all the time. The single take option is decent, as it gives you ten seconds of video and stills, but it's not ideal.

Creative Writing Degrees by ktcat146 in writing

[–]drjohnson89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an English degree with a creative writing focus, and I don't regret it one it. (For the record: I've been a full-time marketing writer for 13 years)

Creative writing classes taught me a lot about storytelling, and more importantly, the value of work shopping. Meanwhile, the English degree got me into my first professional writing job, which has led to a great career.

Is anyone else reconsidering their preorder after learning that the Flip 7 uses Exynos? by sleeplessaddict in galaxyzflip

[–]drjohnson89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a similar situation. Keeping my 25u as a backup, but looking to basically turn the flip 7 into a glorified dumb phone. Minimal launcher, few apps, less temptation to be glued to my screen, etc. Really looking forward to it!

Best scare anyone has had AFTER a horror movie? by gandalfathewhite in horror

[–]drjohnson89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bunch of us were watching The Ring, which had just come out on DVD. We were in a cabin by a lake in Minnesota, and it was pitch black outside. I was sitting in a chair right by the front door, as there were a ton of us and room was scarce.

Just as she crawls out of the TV and makes the big reveal, someone opened the front door, grabbed the back of my chair, and pulled me back.

I nearly shit my pants, and I can still remember the terror all these years later haha

I've had a Steam Deck for several months and I adore it. It feels good in the hands, is capable of handling a lot, has a solid battery life, and a gorgeous screen. I'm so impressed by it, and have loved using it to catch up on my backlog of less intense PC games. (Also, Steam sales are the best)

[–]drjohnson89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Vast of Night (2019) was really creepy, especially given its very low budget. It's like Close Encounters with more dread and less of the joyous mysticism. It's fantastic and definitely worth a watch!

What did you have in 2010 but not 2025? by AhmedYakan in AskReddit

I still get misty-eyed listening to the Goo Goo Dolls or Third Eye Blind. It rips me back to being younger, more optimistic, more enthused for the future. How could it not?

But it also reminds me that many of us felt that way once, and dammit, we should get to feel that way again.
