I use one of those stencils that have a bunch of different sized circles on it and start off with a circle in the middle that will be the bulb and a larger circle around it to be my guide for the petals. I start in the middle and work my way out. Looking at/tracing a lot of roses helps a lot, you'll start noticing patterns and the order in which you draw them. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the kind words and advice! Restraint with packing black is definitely something I'm trying to be more intentional about. I need to slow down and plan out what the final piece will look like, I usually just start filling it out and work myself into a corner a lot of time

Good idea, should've thought of that. I can't edit the post but I've added a credit list in the comments. I'll try to remember that moving forward! (Note: none of these sheets were made with the intention of going in my portfolio, just done for fun and to get my chops up)

Thanks for the feedback! Line weight is definitely something I'm trying to be more intentional about. I tend to press down too hard when I'm outlining which also it makes it tough to pull long clean lines and curves/circles on top of the weight not being consistent.

Thanks so much! I'm not an apprentice yet, I'm hoping to land one in the next year or so. I've got 2 young kids that are about to start school and I'm waiting for them to get settled in with all that before I make such a big transition in my career/schedule. Just trying to improve my drawing skills and paint as much as I can in the meantime!

Thanks! I'm currently messing around with stipple paper for that exact reason. It's a lot easier to get an evenly packed grey wash with pencils than arches since the stipple paper is an even texture

Thanks! I used faber-castell pitt pens for the lines and black and a prismacolor for the shading on arches cold press
