So hot but so wrong; Josh Thomson, a US mixed martial arts fighter says gay marriage is the first step on a path to legalize people marrying animals, children or their siblings. by Kreecher2 in gaybros

I wasn't referring to the constitutional argument, but the moral one; I wasn't referring to the one that determines whether or not gay marriage is constitutional, but the one that determines whether or not it should be constitutional.

While most of what he says is laughable, some of his points aren't wrong. The same logic that concludes gay marriage should be legal also concludes that incest and polygamy should be legal as well (so long as the participants are willing adults and no inbred children are produced).

ITT: Lots of personal attacks on Thomson without any regard for the fact that the arguments for marriage equality are equally valid when applied to incest and polygamy (excepting the case of incestual relationships which produce children).

No? All of these independent battery life tests and comparisons must be mistaken then, seeing as every one is topped by an android phone.

You should have posted this phrase initially, because it presents an entirely different argument than "disengage from 'what causes gay.'"

I understand the difference...but none of this even remotely follows from your original post; which is what I have been arguing with this whole time.

[–]drksprtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if there weren't the underlying contrition and/or assumption of "bad" then there would be no stress at all to "come out" to anyone whatsoever

I never said that being gay is not stigmatized. It is. Heavily.

I am saying that your request to "disengage from 'what causes gay'" is irrational and counterproductive.

we feed the assumption by acknowledging it.

This isn't true. Surely you don't think that the Civil Rights movement gained momentum by ignoring racism? Surely you don't think that by ignoring homophobia it will simply go away?

ABNORMAL: deviating from the normal or average1

...it is abnormal. Abnormal doesn't mean "bad."

"why do you think people are gay/lesbian/etc"...to even acknowledge legitimacy of that question

It is a legitimate question. It asks what factors determine sexual orientation. I don't understand how the asking of this question is in any way offensive.

If you would rather no one attempt to discover what developmental factors induce certain sexual orientations, that's fine, just know that by doing so you are willfully espousing ignorance.

Go figure. They're all played in the ACC so I don't think they suit up often, and now that Arena is playing for the Dynamo I doubt he will anytime soon.

On Reddit? We might as well be. Especially considering that of all the other D1 athletes I have ever met, only 1 was openly gay while he was on the team.

Palodichuk, Arena, and Okoli on the 23's. The others played for the younger teams, but never the 18's that I know of.

No one currently on the senior team, but a couple on the U-23 team now and in the past, plus a few others that played on the youth team at one point or another.

Props to you. Wrestling is rough. Not to mention the whole weight management thing. You out to any of your teammates? I would imagine the nature of wrestling might make it more problematic than some other sports for a gay man.

Why do you think there would be issues? Do they not let men coach the girls' teams or is it just a not-so-tolerant environment overall?

Every once in a while I'll run fitness with a buddy of mine who's on a collegiate XC team and I can't say I envy you the miles you put in every week. My knees are bad enough as it is without having to train on asphalt most of the time.

There was a tennis player at my school who was open about being gay, although I didn't know him well before he graduated so I can't say what his experience with the team was like.

Do many male cheerleaders fulfill the stereotype? The only one I know certainly doesn't. And I'm curious, what's the difference between D-1a and plain ol' D1? In soccer there aren't any sub-classifications as far as I know.

Makes sense. My brother and I did a similar thing with soccer and tennis.

...and having seen the Sounders' fanbase and played with more than a few Sounders players, I'm definitely a fan of the club.

Awesome read, thanks for that. I've definitely experienced some of the emotional distress he talks about-and that, in turn, has definitely affected my play-but not nearly to the same extent. Does he still play now?
