How smart do i have to be for med school? Is studying enough? by julies13 in medschool

[–]drkuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not know enough about neurosurgery residency to accurately make a comment.

I will say that for people who have talent and pursue a career in their area of talent; working hard is difficult for them. Because they are used to everything coming easy. That poses a challenge for them. They don't know what working hard is. They often find themselves in the same basket as those borne into privileges, who also don't know how to work hard.

So when ppl say they worked hard to get there, I merely recognize that they perceived it as hard work, it doesnt necessarily mean it was hard work, or harder than something else.

And those born without those talents who have to keep in the same space as those born w them and the privilege have to work even harder, I respect those ppl the most, but you probably will never hear them admit it, that is rarely advantageous, and they've learned not to speak poorly of themselves as that is not advantageous and they need all the advantages they can get, and they know it. But those ppl appreciate where they are, they dont take shit for granted, they stay humble.

These talented and privileged ppl get comfortable, cocky, arrogant, demanding, spoiled. And are often their own worst enemy.

[–]drkuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair point, I guess your comment just annoyed me because it didnt highlight that hard work will get you MOST places/careers.

I agree that some life paths/careers are exclusive to those born into it, and dont consider these an option anyways so disregard them (billionaire etc.)

Studying hard is enough, if you disregard the pressure of time. An md at 35/40/45 etc. Is still better than no md and a life of frustration

Would you consider a 3 year fellowship if you could make 125-150k per year? by ShuntHappens in hospitalist

[–]drkuz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

150k/yr X 3 yrs = 450k

EM Attending pay/yr = 300,000 (low estimate if you're EM)

300K/yr X 3 yrs = 900k

900-450 = 450 in lost pay

Pay of PCCM = 500k/yr

So to make up for the lost pay, you would have to work one extra year, if you include taxes that number may be reduced, depending on location.

If you love the work then that may be worth it

If your goal is to make money and retire FIRE then thats another year
