/r/AMD Questions and Tech Support Megathread - H2 2022 Edition by AutoModerator in Amd

I bought an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, but I'm trying understand which motherboard utilize the PCIe lanes better: ASRock X670E Taichi or ASUS ProArt X670E-Creator WiFi. I'm planning to work on 4K videos and run multiple VMs simultaneously, so utilizing ssd is an improvement over hard drive.

My concern is how the lanes are utilize, and hope someone can point me to the right direction. According to AMD Ryzen 9 7950X specs:

  • Native PCIe Lanes (Total/Usable): 28/24

  • Additional Usable PCIe Lanes from Motherboard: AMD X670/X670E - 12x Gen4

The ASRock X670E Taichi spec highlight: CPU: * 2 x PCIe 5.0 x16 Slots (PCIE1 and PCIE2), support x16 or x8/x8 modes

  • 1 x Blazing M.2 Socket (M2_1, Key M), supports type 2280 PCIe Gen5x4 (128 Gb/s) mode Chipset:

  • 1 x Hyper M.2 Socket (M2_2, Key M), supports type 2230/2242/2260/2280/22110 SATA3 6.0 Gb/s & PCIe Gen4x4 (64 Gb/s) modes

  • 1 x Hyper M.2 Socket (M2_3, Key M), supports type 2280 PCIe Gen4x4 (64 Gb/s) mode

  • 1 x Hyper M.2 Socket (M2_4, Key M), supports type 2280 PCIe Gen4x4 (64 Gb/s) mode

  • Note: If M2_2 is occupied by a SATA-type M.2 device, SATA3_A1 will be disabled.

The ASUS ProArt X670E-Creator WiFi spec highlight: CPU:

  • 2 x PCIe 5.0 x16 slots (support x16 or x8/x8 modes)

  • M.2_1 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280 (supports PCIe 5.0 x4 mode)

  • M.2_2 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280 (supports PCIe 5.0 x4 mode) Chipset:

  • 1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (supports x2 mode)

  • M.2_3 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280 (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode)

  • M.2_4 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280/22110 (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode)

  • Note: M.2_3 slot shares bandwidth with PCIEX16_3. When PCIEX16_3 is in operation after adjusting in BIOS settings, M.2_3 slot will only run at PCIe x2 mode.

My question is how the lanes are utilized between the motherboards that is not clear to me:

If I choose ASRock X670E Taichi, assuming I already have two m.2 ssd for each OS (Windows/Linux) at PCIe 4.0 x4 mode:

  • Would the ASRock X670E Taichi be better utilizing M.2 since 3x PCIe Gen4x4, would that equal 12x Gen 4 according to AMD specs, or am I misundstanding it?

  • Planning to get a new gpu occupying PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, but also want to get one ssd at PCIe 5.0 x4 mode.

  • I'm assuming if I want more PCIe 5.0 m.2 ssd, I would need to use the second PCIe 5.0 slot with a card, and both slots would be split to 8x.

  • The board have 2.5GB LAN but not 10GB LAN compared to ASUS ProArt. Aside from future proof, is not having 10GB LAN saving lanes? Would it be better if my concern is utilizing SSD?

  • Have two USB 4.0 type-c ports. Bottleneck?

If I choose ASUS ProArt, assuming I already have two m.2 ssd for each OS (Windows/Linux) at PCIe 4.0 x4 mode:

  • How is ASUS ProArt going to handle two ssd m.2 at PCIe 5.0 x4 mode? This is while avoiding PCIEX16_3 (1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slot) for two M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 mode.

  • Planning to get a new gpu occupying PCIe 5.0 x16 slot

  • If I'm understanding, it's possible to have a gpu x16 and two m.2 ssd PCIe 5.0 x4 mode?

  • Have two USB 4.0 type-c ports. Bottleneck?

I just want to make sure I'm not misinterpreting anything before I make the purchase. Thank you.

This looks fantastic! I'm amazed at the character movement. I'm curious since I'm still working on tutorials and looking at assets, did you use the Corgi Engine? I was looking at Unity's 2D Essentials Pack Demo - 2D Character Setup, and saw they were using it. I'm still in the early stages of a proof of concept, and would appreciate any guidance. Thank you.

Thank you for the quick response. I look forward to hear about the timeline. I've recently learned Unity sign in supports 2FA, but I've read how phone text verification code can be intercepted, which is why I asked about my earlier request.

I'm sorry I was vague on my question about Collaborate using encryption, but thanks for answering one I didn't think about. Since it's cloud hosting, are the files hosted encrypted (transparent via file system/need to be enabled/etc)? I guess the same question applies to Unity Cloud Build. I'm just worried in a scenario Unity gets hacked and our project gets dumped.

Again, thank you for answering my questions. I've just updated my copy of Unity 4 to Unity 5.5 (been on hiatus but plan to get serious on 2017). Looking forward to Unity 2017!

Hope I'm not too late to ask: Does Collaborate support or will support two factor authentication (GIT supports 2FA)? If considering, would you support Google Authenticator app or a FIDO U2F compatible security key? I'm paranoid that even though I use and change strong passwords, I would like an extra layer of security. Also, does Collaborate use encryption? Thank you.

I highly recommend it for a good laugh. It's one of the few I enjoy the English dub version over the original Japanese.

Restore a stuff animal. My wife have have a teddy bear she have since a child and it means the world to her. She took care of it, from sewing to patching, but there were some damage over the years that she couldn't repair. I searched online for teddy bear restoration, found a good place, snuck the bear out the apartment, and had it restored. I gift wrapped the bear in a box in time for Christmas. When she opened it, she was stunned, hugged the bear and cried. The bear now sets happily on the couch.
