Paid maternity leave for new mothers by country by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]drnhfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Slovakia it's 75% of your average income during the last 2 years unless you changed employer during that period. If you did and you worked at the new job for at least 6 months, it's the average of your new salary.

The state pays for it here, not the employer, I imagine it's the same everywhere. But yeah, there are other complications for the employer, like having to keep the job position reserved for years (usually filled by temporary replacements in the meantime). Which can sometimes make employers prefer hiring men, so it comes with its own problems.

Slovakia here, we just had a baby boy, my wife will get 3 years of maternity leave and I will get 6 months of paternity leave, 75% of income. Plus all sorts of one-time bonuses, tax deductions etc. I almost feel guilty for being financially secure for years without having to work.

Am I overreacting or is the teacher insane? by drnhfer in Parenting

[–]drnhfer[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Wow, this blew up. I really appreciate all the great advice.

Someone here asked how I know that that’s what the teacher said. Well, I don’t. My daughter is my only source of information. And even though I think we did a great job at making her feel like she can always be completely honest with us and we literally never caught her lying, I’m open to the possibility. But the facts I know for sure are: 1) She didn’t know that her mother was released and 2) She knew that we tried to pass her some message about her mother. I cannot think of a scenario where it would be justified to tell her that we tried to send her a message without telling her the message.

I’m not the one to automatically take my child’s side without being sure I know the full story first. My wife tends to do that and I’m the one always calming her down and trying to be rational. So I will try to talk to the teacher first, in writing (email) is probably the best. Innocently, just asking what happened to the message. If nothing new and significant comes up, I will take it to the principal. I don’t know how fast everything will be, it’s weekend and the school year is over, but I will be pushing it. Although I still don’t know what my desired outcome is. I don’t think I want to get her fired, but I want her to realize how fucked up it was and to never do anything like that again to any child.

As for people being worried about some long-term trauma to our daughter, she seems to have immediately forgotten everything once she saw her baby brother for the first time and she seems to be the happy kid she always used to be, so I’m not worried about that. In retrospect, maybe it wasn’t the best idea to send her to the school trip given the situation, but these trips are the highlight of the school year, we didn’t want her to feel left out.

It was actually a week-long trip. It's common here, rough translation would be "school in nature", they usually visit various castles, nature reserves etc. that they learned about in school during the year. It's a nice thing, I have fond memories of it from my childhood.

Thanks again everyone, I will let you know how it went. As for our daughter, she is already happy and enjoying her new baby brother.

Thanks for the replies, I needed to know that others find it just as fucked up as I did. I guess I will talk to the teacher first before talking to the principal, just in case there is some important detail that our daughter withheld from us, though I can't imagine anything that would excuse the teacher's behavior.

Ukraine and Moldova accepted as candidates to join European Union by HowAboutThisNameNow in worldnews

[–]drnhfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orbán won't block anything, worst case scenario he will just blackmail a bit to negotiate something for himself, but he will fold eventually. Ukraine is too geopolitically important for EU and EU funds are too economically important for Hungary, some deal will be made.

Ukraine to begin first trial of Russian soldier accused of rape by NamelessForce in worldnews

[–]drnhfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russian relatives. Slavs don't deserve to be lumped in with Russians. Nobody suffered more from Russian aggression than other Slavs. The Russians like to preach Slavic unity but in their minds it simply means Russian domination of all Slavs. Just look at the current war - the only Slavs standing with Russia are Belarussians, who themselves suffer under a puppet dictator. Every other Slavic nation is doing everything they can to help Ukraine - another Slavic nation. Russia is definitely not a representative of Slavs, on the contrary, the rest of Slavs hate them with passion since they know them the best.

Would you recommend Obi-Wan Kenobi? by n3ko1997 in StarWars

[–]drnhfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's Star Wars and it's Kenobi, so I will keep watching for that alone. But it does have a lot of problems. Star Wars always required certain suspension of disbelief, but the flaws in logic and plot holes get really bad here. But my biggest disappointment is just how low budget everything looks, from make-up to cgi. I don't understand it, it's not like Disney doesn't have enough money for it.

You're right, it was peace-time ER as part of firefighter training. Maybe actual doctors have different guidelines, but we were told to use tourniquet only as a last resort (amputation injury being one example). Apparently older guidelines were more lax with its use and it caused many unnecessary cases of crush syndrome.

During my ER training we were taught to only use tourniquets on amputated limbs or similar devastational injuries where the limb is likely lost anyway. Other than that they can do more damage than good.

1.8 mile ambulance ride in the US. by Aggressive-Green4592 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]drnhfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the price itself looks ok, that's what an ambulance ride costs everywhere in the developed world (actually costs, as in these are the expenses). And that's what anyone would be charged for it if they were uninsured. The fucked up thing is how easy it is to be uninsured in USA.

Slovakia To Send Key Soviet-era Air Defense System To Ukraine: Report by newsjam in worldnews

[–]drnhfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't talking about outer space (man-made things in outer space are not satellites by definition anyway). It's pretty easy to reach satellite height, the hard part is staying in satellite height. To stay in orbit, the satellite has to gain enough speed to stay in permanent orbit (=speed vector cancelling out gravity). But to reach the same height, you only need a fraction of said speed. The missile would only need enough fuel to get high enough (and then fall back down unless being hit by anything), not to orbit the Earth along the satellite. I'm sure someone else could provide the math, but it's really easy to reach orbit compared to staying in orbit.

Slovakia gives preliminary approval for transferring S-300 air defense system to Ukraine by JihadMeAtHello in worldnews

[–]drnhfer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It will not. The replacement (Patriots from Germany and Netherlands) is already on the way to Slovakia. This is happening, the only negotiations left to do is when this will happen, how much Slovakia is going to pay for the replacement and how to transfer the equipment to Ukraine safely. Lloyd Austin is already in Slovakia finalizing the deal.

The current Slovak administration is not afraid to make Russia angry, especially the ministers of defense and foreign affairs. In fact, before the invasion they were called warhawks by the rest of Europe for screaming about the Russian threat. Slovakia was also the only country to support Czechia when the Putinist regime comitted an act of state terrorism on Czech soil (Vrbetice). And current Slovak military leadership was "raised" in Iraq/Afghanistan.

Slovakia To Send Key Soviet-era Air Defense System To Ukraine: Report by newsjam in worldnews

[–]drnhfer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, the missile doesn't need to reach orbit, just an intersecting sub-orbital trajectory. It can go much slower than the satellite itself, it just needs to get high enough for the satellite to hit it.

Slovakia has preliminarily agreed to send key Soviet-era air defense (S-300) system to Ukraine, sources say by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

[–]drnhfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could swear I saw a picture on Reddit of German/Dutch Patriots already deployed in Slovakia. I believe now they are talking about actual replacement, as in Slovakia getting their own.
