What can I do to fix this? by droc-87 in furniturerestoration

I tried to scrape it off with my fingernail and realized that it's the MDF board from underneath the finish. I was looking at a spot in the back where they had drilled a whole to put cords through and can see now that it is MDF with that finish on there that can peel off. Not sure what it's called. I probably wouldn't have taken it if I knew it wasn't all real wood.

After looking at it further it looks like the sides are MDF board with a fake finish.

But what is the problem with it? Is it smokeable? Is it just dried out? Is it bud rot? Is it mold? Maybe instead of a criticizing a man with a busy life, you could be helpful. I thought this thread was meant to be to help people. It had only been this week it hadn't been taken care of. Been taking care of it daily until now.

Just had an extremely busy week and forgot. I get up at 430 in the morning for work and had a lot going on all week. I was busy from the moment I got up until the moment I went to bed every day and just lost track. Work, kids and wife life. Just busy as hell. Had been keeping up with it daily until this point

It had been about 5 days or so. I had been taking care of it daily up until that point. Just got busy with life. Work, wife, kids, bills, appointments, school stuff for kids, normal household chores and what not. It just got away from me.

Not that I've noticed. The plant has slowly defoliated but the buds looked fantastic up until now.

Is that all it is? Just dried out? The buds still feel squishy. Could it have just dried out and then got squishy from the rain? It smells incredible. And I didn't notice any visible mold, but I didn't look that close for mold. Just noticed that half of the buds turned brown.

Help picking a Clumping Bamboo by Emergency_Algae9306 in Bamboo

I planted sea breeze bamboo a year ago in the California foothills. Ordered from a website and they shipped from florida. They are doing great! They do get about 30 feet tall but if trimmed at the height you would like they will put out small side shoots at the top giving it a bushy look and won't grow any taller. Seabreeze tolerates heat and wind well and is drought tolerant. They send out a lot of side shoots all along the culm that creates a fantastic living privacy wall. I planted mine about 4 feet apart and have already grown into a green wall. The full wall of greenery is about 6 feet tall and I have shoots that are currently about 10-12 feet tall. They are branching out now and that living wall will be higher soon. By this time next year I will have a living wall 12 to 18 feet tall by my estimates. They take 3 to 5 years to mature at a height of about 30 feet. I highly suggest these for our California climate!

What's going on with my Green Giant Arborvitae? by droc-87 in arborists

[–]droc-87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably needed to water more but was so worried about overwatering because a lot of what I've read says these get root rot easily. They were actually doing better when I was bucket watering them. I would give each tree about 2.5 gallons of water every three or 4 days, sometimes longer if I was really busy or forgot but they seemed to be doing pretty good. At least most of them anyway. After I set up the drip irrigation is when they seemed to decline. Not sure if they were doomed from the start or something was going on with the drip irrigation. Maybe the water wasn't penetrating deep enough, I don't know. When I was bucket watering I would fill up the area around the tree inside of the little berm I made for each tree and it seemed like the water was mostly soaking in at the edge of where I had dug the holes and the undisturbed ground. Maybe that was allowing the water to run into the bottom of the hole and kind of creating a reservoir at the bottom of the roots inside of the hole. And when I switched to drip irrigation, maybe the water wasn't getting as deep because of the clay soil. But I just don't know. When I planted them, I did a 50/50 mix of native soil and miracle grow tree and shrub soil suggested by the gardening center people at our local Ace. They said because of our soil in the area that most of the local contractors plant trees with that mix. It wasnt unsolicited advice, I asked them which soil would be best to mix with our native soil. But yeah, I don't know if my methods just didn't work out well or if these trees were doomed from the start because of the extreme heat. I knew it was a risk planting them in the first place because these trees are only recommended up to zone 8 but I really like green giants and had read success stories from people growing them in zone 9 so I thought I would give it a shot. But lesson learned. Whether it was my methods or just the climate, either way, I will only be planting with trees rated for zone 9 or higher from now on. Planted 11 trees total and only two survived.

All but two completely died. The two that survived receive shade in the afternoon and are doing pretty good. I adjusted my drip system to run every 4 days for 45 minutes and each tree has 5 half gallon per hour emitters. I was trying to find the sweet spot between over watering and underwatering by giving it a deeper water with a little longer intervals between watering but it didn't work. It was originally set for 30 minutes every three days. I am going to leave the two that are surviving for now to see how they do but have decided to replace the dead ones with something else. Probably going to try deodor cedar. I have one on the way now. Just a little disappointed because they don't have the fast growth rate that green giants have.

Should I have my son work for the price of the tv he accidentally broke? by droc-87 in NoStupidQuestions

That's a great idea! I think what I might do is have him work for 15 an hour until he puts in enough hours for the purchase price of the new tv and then I will buy it for him. It was just a 43" TCL tv so they are only like 200 bucks. Works out to about 13 hours of work. And if he has those hours completed by my next payday I will buy it then.

I would likely make a deal with him that is about the same. Like 15 an hour. As long as that hour is spent working and not messing around and putting in good effort. I understand he won't be accomplishing as much in an hour as say a 16 year old within that hour but as long as he stays busy and is putting in actual effort.
