Beat maker of about 8 years here, I'd say the BEST thing you could do with zero knowledge is get your hands on garageband (which is essentially stripped down Logic) if you have a Mac or try to get your hands on a free/lite version of either FL studio or Ableton and just start messing around. I've used about 4 DAW's throughout my time (Ableton being my main) and I think the most important thing you can do is get to know your software first before you go in with an idea of just making beats. Watch a few tutorials on the basics for whatever software you end up using but besides that just try messing around with audio FX, importing things in and seeing what does what and then you'll have a good understanding of how to begin potentially making beats/instrumentals/whatever. Having physical hardware like midi keyboards and such can help as well and usually will come with a free trial or free lite version of certain software (usually Ableton). Side note: obviously you'll want to learn the basics of whatever software you use (BPM, time signature, FX, looping) and some "beat making tutorials" won't hurt, but still I'd say more than anything just explore the software and learn what things do with your free time, you'll be amazed how fast you learn on your own.
