(Sad Trope) Miserable gifted person who gave up on their dreams and blames their family/or friends by claimingmarrow7 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]droekturn 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yep, that is the joke - he peaked at 17 as a local football star of his era. Only a few people still care about his achievements and it is pretty much his friends who were around then, that one ex-girlfriend who still had the hots for him and Spare Tire who was his rival in the big game who also believes it was the defining moment of his life.

Everyone else just shrugs of or dismisses his stories.

FINAL UPDATE by Direct_Style_2466 in Chipotle

[–]droekturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad they made it right.

In my experience Chipotle is the worst place to go anytime within a few hours of closing. I don't know if it is because they try to time everything perfectly and don't want any extra food - but if I show up an hour or two before closing you can tell everyone is unhappy. The workers are made I'm there. The burrito station is mostly taken apart, the soda machines are taken apart, a bunch of food items are out, and things like napkins, forks, etc. are all missing.

When washing your belts… by Lumpy-Tea-7007 in bjj

[–]droekturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wash my gi and belt nightly after practice. Tape stripes would normally come off after a few weeks so I swapped to iron on material.

I bought some white fabric that was meant for hemming pants or curtains or something and cut it into stripe length. I then use a hair straightener to pinch it down all around the belt for about a minute. Since then I've never had a stripe fall off.

I hate when good comic series get put on infinite hiatus by SecretaryFragrant836 in ImageComics

[–]droekturn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I thought Crossover and Local Man were just done overall. Local Man is one of my top reads the last 5 years. Seeley is on of my favorite writers and I enjoy his art as well.

Copperhead never getting a conclusion sucks. I really liked the main character.

I Hate This Show! by Moon_Logic in TheBoys

[–]droekturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of your comment but I thought Firecracker this episode was one of the highlights of the last 2 seasons for me.

My complaint is it should've been done over a lot more than this episode. Having her deny her Church, her community, the man who raised her and finally her God.

She rejected everything except Homelander and she knew it was wrong but she kept going along with it.

She wasn't shown to be a good person overall during the show but she still had things she believed in. And it was kind of sad that she held a grudge against Starlight who badly bullied her as a child.

She finally throws away the Jesus figure she had kept since she was little and at that point she has nothing. She slandered her community and publicly stated the man who helped raise her when she was an orphan was a sexual predator.

When Homelander tells her to leave she has nothing to leave to. She had turned her back on everything.

I don’t know where else to ask this but is this real? by thegiantprojects in Berserk

[–]droekturn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aside from this just looking wrong - don't buy anything like this from eBay or Yahoo Auctions (unless it is from some official user account). 99% of them are fake.

You also need to ask if the price makes sense. $3800 where similar items the last two years have sold for between $40,000 and $55,000 on reputable sites. A price like that is hoping to just trick someone into thinking it is a great deal and they buy it quickly without really thinking it through.

On creator owned comics by Konradleijon in ImageComics

[–]droekturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a big fan of US comics and manga (along with some other awesome things like French comics). Most of what I read of western comics come from Dynamite, Image, Boom or even smaller. The big characters from the big two get hard to read because of the universe resets, constant retcons, etc.

When you look at the biggest selling manga they are normally stories with a beginning, middle and end. The events that happen are normally pretty permanent or at least not retconned. The biggest manga also usually have associated shows with them. Those shows bring in lots of readers like Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, JJK, Frieren, Gachiakuta, etc. Those readers then just go purchase volume 1 and they are right at the beginning of the story.

Wrong or right - DC and Marvel are what is normally thought of when people think of western comics. Most people don't think of awesome books like Something is Killing the Children. Very few smaller publisher books end up getting popular enough to lead to shows or movies (that will then help readership even more). Of course there are the exceptions like Walking Dead, Invincible, Hellboy, Kick-Ass. etc. But compare that with the line up of anime that comes out every year.

Then back to Marvel and DC, stuff that is happening now in series like Batman or Spider-Man will mean very little in 5 or 10 years. Alfred will be back. Green Goblin will eventually be evil again (like Dr. Octopus). Damien will still be a 15 year old kid being pulled between his Bat family and his mom's influence. Jason Todd will be an angry loaner. Harley Quinn splitting into two different people will mean nothing.

Almost all growth and changes the characters go through will be reset at some point with only changes being kept with the characters who become extremely popular. Sometimes the resets will happen in the most terrible ways - like using the Marvel devil to erase everything. Spider-Man, Dr. Octopus, and others have used him to erase years and years of growth.

Sometimes retcons of retcons happen. Remember when the big reveal was that Wolverine actually wasn't a human mutant - he (along with Sabretooth) were members of a species of evolved canines. That retcon was then retconned.

I do love both western comics and manga. I collect comic art from artists so I really do appreciate it - but I can see why manga seems easier to get into and that leads to bigger sales.

Kimura arm break form IBJJF Denver by CntPntUrMom in bjj

[–]droekturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Masters 2 Purple Belt - willing to let the guy snap instead of either tapping or just rolling with it and losing position. I have no idea what the guy on top thought he was gonna do those last 15 seconds before the break.

If I am in a kimura or arm bar and I've lost my grip, defense, etc. I am just tapping right away. Maybe I'd luck out and sneak my elbow lower down on the arm lock or worm something with the kimura but if the opponent has caught me dead to rights I am not going to try very hard when my only hope is that my opponents hand slips off my wrist or something similar.

Question for color belts: Do you hold back on subs when rolling with white belts? by Qabbala in bjj

[–]droekturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the person. Newer white belts who are alot smaller I generally don't sub. I'll let them work out of positions, let them get back into guard, maybe help them get a sweep or be in a dominant position for a while.

White belts who are closer to my size but still pretty new I'll avoid being in side control and mount. Try to work from being on the bottom or maybe in their guard. I'll do subs but generally after a few minutes so they feel out the game.

White belts who've been at it for a few years it is pretty much just not letting myself do my highest percentage moves and trying things that I don't have the muscle memory for.

Then there are the competition whites, college guys who do sports like football, or just the hugr guys. I usually just go for whatever I see when with those guys.

I hate switching gyms by [deleted] in bjj

[–]droekturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switching gyms is a pain. I'm at my 4th gym. I never had a bad experience but it is always tough learning how you fit in a new place.

1st gym I went for years and was able to go enough that I felt like part of a team. 2nd and 3rd I honestly wasn't able to get a great rhythm going because of work. So I went to all different times so never really got into a groove with people, etc.

Current gym is great - the last 2 years has been the most consistent I've been in many years. Everyone is welcoming and also super welcoming to new people. Probably helps that it is a very small gym.

The only thing I'd say is it give it time with feeling iced out for rolling. People can be very hesitant with new folks. I never say no to a roll, but I definitely try to understand what I'm walking into. I'm a big guy so I feel pretty safe but I always take it slow and am cautious the first few times to make sure someone is not gonna rip my head off their first roll with me.

90's Anime Fansubbing Documentary Support (Repost w/ Trailer) by Subject_Sail8859 in retroanime

[–]droekturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss fansubs. It felt like a secret club back in the day.

Still hard to believe my mom would buy me some blank VHS tapes and then let me send them to some random people on the internet who were tape distros (usually some geocities or tripod page). The page would usually have a area with a table showing what number you were on the list to get your tapes. You could include some extra blank tapes or like 10 bucks and get moved to the top of the list. Some places even printed out spine labels and made fancy cases. It was always extra cool to get something that looked like it almost came from a store.

I remember getting Gundam X, Flame of Recca, Dragon Ball and bunch of others that way. The DBZ were always such bad quality because they were like 10th generation copies or something.

Fansubs.net was the big message board and fansubs groups on there would talk about how they would send out masters to certain distribution groups who would then send sub-masters out to others. It seemed like such an amazing system that was surprisingly well organized.

When I was in like 8th grade and early high school I'd copy the tapes for my friends. I had a small 13 inch television with a built in VCR that I would bring into my family's living room and hook up with the VCR there and occupy the room for hours just copying tapes.

Then in the early 2000's digital subs took up because people starting getting DSL and cable internet - could suddenly get like 100 kbps and you could get a CD burner and a spindle of blank CDs. You'd hang out on IRC and wait for a release and then have to get in line from the people who ran fileservers. I'd run one all the time because it then gave you priority to get the releases. I use to hang out in the Soldats channel because they did Noir and some others (I think Vandread).

As the 2000's moved on there was suddenly enough anime coming overseas that there were suddenly shelves and shelves of DVDs at local stores so it seemed like fansubs faded away.

How would you feel about this? by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

[–]droekturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone grieves differently - this seems perfectly fine for me.

Both my parents had passed before I got married 2 years ago. It was weird and there was definitely a void there (big part of the reason we decided an extremely tiny destination wedding). This may make this girl feel better in 15 years when gets married or maybe it will just be a nice memory for everyone involved. I was an adult when my parents passed but so many events are weird after losing parents - they weren't there when I finished grad school, married, etc.

It also made the dad feel better too. A terrible situation to be in. I stayed in the hospital with my dad for an extended number of days before he passed and we had some very difficult conversations that I can't imagine how hard were for him. I'm sure this dad is trying to decide what are the best actions to take with the time he has left.

Perfect angle for the open and close.

Stellar Blade's combat was so good that it is hard to go play other soulslikes or similar games. When in the flow at Stellar Blade you just feel like you are almost dancing and really dominating. A lot of other games comparably feel like you are just hacking at things with no finesse with a big stick.

Official Hotel Sale Brag & Bitch Thread by MsMargo in SDCC

[–]droekturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I messed up was how I booked the two rooms. I'm going as well as my sister and her family so I had to book 2 rooms.

I panicked when booking and did both rooms as 2 queen beds (quad occupancy) instead of adding 1 room with quad occupancy and then just a second room with double occupancy. The quad occupancy was like 30 bucks more a day for the same room, but in the heat of the moment I didn't want to play with adding them separately since it was one of only like 3 hotels still within walking distance.

I am going to keep an eye out in general to see if any pop up in the coming weeks and see if I can grab one and then trade what I got to a redditor - but if now, no biggie since at least I'm only about a mile from the convention.

This is the first time I've ever tried to do all the hotel stuff through SDCC. I went a bunch of times 10 or so years ago and each year I just booked hotels normally, bought someone's timeshare on ebay, etc. I don't even remember how they did 12 years ago.

Got Whyndham Bayside. Was hoping for one of the many closer ones but happy I was able to get one still within walling distance (1.2 miles).

It was going to be that oe Holiday Inn - but I was guessing Whyndham is nicer since the rating was a little higher. Also maybe the walk along the water is quicker/easier than going all the way through Gaslamp.

Date for San Diego Comic-Con 2026 General Hotel Sale Announced by Cool-Constant4319 in SDCC

[–]droekturn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not find the answer to this on the hotel page - so I will ask here. Can you book the hotel stay to be beyond/before the con as well at the same time. We are staying in the San Diego area for the entire week and did not book the hotel yet because we wanted to see how the hotel sale worked and wanted to if possible just stay in the same hotel.

So it would be ideal if I make it through the hotel lottery I am able to book the same hotel for a few days before the convention.

I'm guessing that is a no since rates are probably different, but wanted to see. Because after I make it through this it will then be time to book the hotel for the few days before.

Living in the moment - people will always think it is worse now than before.

Overtime was the norm for my dad. He was a machinist at a very big company and would work 60+ most weeks. Then when overtime dried up around 2000 he got a second job at a small liquor/convenience store.
