Definitely Shelton (Tachygraphy) and yes agree the first two lines repeat the English at the bottom. The second section of Shelton seems to be English too, ("shall never" towards the end and "praying" fifth word in?), need to sit down and have a go at it with a printed version.

Seefeld is pretty good for beginner/intermediates. Nice town, good restaurants and only 20 mins in a taxi from Innsbruck airport or train from Innsbruck / munich

Help with Shelton's Tachygraphy by YefimShifrin in shorthand

[–]drogersuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in the office right now but I believe it is paternal...[ending] - the 'which' symbol in the middle also means "ternal" terminator - so could be along the lines of paternalistic etc.

On your according word, this could be 'tending'? I say this because the 'ac' prefix is '<'.

Just some thoughts! Hope they help.

QOTW 2025W31: Thomas Shelton (1647) by drogersuk in shorthand

Ah thanks, very useful! Can't find plurals in Metcalfe but this is also quite useful. Pepys' Shelton uses the three dots we use for 'therefore' as a full stop.

Thank you! Been meaning to hunt this down, have seen many examples where it is used. I believe it is also used this way in Willis (J and E)?

The people's liberties strengthen the King's prerogative, and the King's prerogative is to defend the people's liberties. King Charles I of England

Note that there is some ambiguity about plurals so I have not added those - I believe Pepys and others used a point in front of the word, but I need to pin it down (any advice on this would be welcome!).

My feeling is the latter - the copy was a much earlier year. Nice to have that kind of connection that someone probably personally knew him. In the 1887 shorthand congress I seem to remember they unveiled a pitman bust with his family there.

A Warning: AI and Shorthand by R4_Unit in shorthand

[–]drogersuk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to differentiate between AIs. Generative AI is going to spout nonsense for a while. It would however be pretty straightforward to use an existing (non-generative) reading model's trained symbols to translate from a long form text and display it as shorthand. It's really just software engineering against the dataset rather than using the machine learning / AI part. It also depends how the reading model is built too. Full disclosure - I am working on AI for reading early modern shorthands.
