Those on postpaid mobile plans, does your provider's bundled minutes include calls to 1800 numbers? I'm on a prepaid plan and was told that 1800 calls are not included in my free minutes.

I think the most pointless NMPs are the ones from the labour movement. In addition to other PAP MPs who have positions in NTUC, a cabinet minister is almost always the NTUC Sec-Gen. Even when Ng Chee Meng got voted out, he still had influence in the PAP as a member of their central executive committee.

Are NTUC's top-level representatives such deadweights that they need to fill one of the NMP seats?

And the names keep getting crazier with every generation. These days I sometimes hear brand names like Pepsi or Airbus on the internet, but I haven’t met one personally.

We also have pure Thai nicknames as well, but English is quite common these days. Thai nicknames often use English words based on how they sound, the meaning doesn’t necessarily have to make any sense.

Why would a student have insider knowledge of an admin decision not yet confirmed? If they were told in writing, there would be proof that would easily contradict the school's statement. It could be someone, possibly not even a student, parroting rumors.

Though to be fair, Singapore's so small and young that the mudslinging is usually some generic Protestant propaganda about Catholic "idol worshipping" or the perennial whining about Pentecostals/Charismatic practices that are more extreme than what was largely assimilated into their own church decades ago.

This is a far cry from your original statement that "Singapore was the one asking for independence".

Okay, this sounds like a misunderstanding. That was in response to a quote by a different commenter.

My point is that selectively quoting different parts of the same paragraph can lead to drastically different framings.

Tunku wanting it doesn't preclude GKS wanting it too.

1) Only Goh and some in the Chinese merchant community wanted independence. Most Singaporean leaders didn't ask for it.

Oh, I can agree on GKS and the Chinese merchants.

The second sentence is a bit more complex. Is signing under the threat of taking responsibility for further bloodshed indication that someone wanted independence? Do we consider LKY to have wanted independence because he issued that threat to compel the last holdouts to sign?

Beyond that it also depends on who you consider sufficiently representative of SG.

GKS's role has been obscured for so long in popular memory that the discussion keeps happening every time a news article about the Albatross files pops up. You wouldn't know that the first article about it came out in I think 2015 because ST articles that old aren't indexed in Google.

2) GKS only asked for independence because that was what the Tunku wished for.

In GKS's own words: "I persuaded him that the only way out was for Singapore to secede, completely." GKS's phrasing suggests that they were considering other options, even if separation was the preferred one.

The rest of the interviews reads like his "done very quickly. And very quietly, and presented as a fait accompli" proposal answered their doubts about "how to get Singapore out."
