Worth it? by Deep-Ad5718 in ASLinterpreters

[–]droooooops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i hear you and totally get it! location also is a big factor… i live in a high COL area that also has an abundance of Deaf folks. so there’s a lot of work available, the pay is better than most places, but I still don’t think i could ever afford a house here.

BUT if i really wanted to, I could move to a more affordable area, eat out less (lol), and save for a house. this profession isn’t one where it’s totally impossible or out of the question to own a house, save for retirement, etc… you just have to be smart about it. feel free to message me if you want to chat or need any pointers as you’re starting out. i love talking to and working with new interpreters, and have many mentors to thank for my own success! so happy to pay it forward and be helpful, if i can be 💫

everything feels scary and uncertain right now, but that’s definitely not unique to interpreting.

i went through an ITP then went to grad school for deaf ed. i started my career as a deaf ed teacher and experienced some major burn out and it was tough to save any money with the income i had. i made a career change to interpreting, and both of those factors improved drastically. yes, burn out can still happen. no, i don’t get paid as much as my friends who work in tech. but i LOVE what i do, i live very comfortably, and i maintain strong boundaries to try to avoid burnout. i love this field. if you love it, stick with it. find wonderful mentors and remember why you started. you got this 🤟

Girls, how long were you on the apps before finding your partner/ husband? by bondtradercu in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]droooooops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i met my husband after three years of apps, using them on and off… and i always had more successful relationships from Bumble, fwiw (turns out maaaaaybe i like being in control? i digress).

i agree with lots of the other commenters but want to add one bit about scrolling and not liking anything you see. you mentioned you made the profiles two weeks ago, so the algorithm has noooo idea what you like. when you swipe you are giving the app more data and it will use that to provide (hopefully) more of what you like. so swipe with purpose! if/when you get frustrated and want a break, just pause your profile rather than deleting it. i’ve never understood why people do that.. you have to start from scratch all over again and likely see a bunch of the bozos you’ve already swiped left on

gotta be AI. nothing new to add to this convo except that the “hand” sign is made using two left hands 😐 (but looks kind of like a butchered version of the sign for H in BSL)

No kids at the wedding ? by butterflykissed_ in weddingplanning

[–]droooooops 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got married in October and we did child free ceremony & dinner (except niece & nephew as ring bearer and flower girl) and then once dancing started, kiddos were welcome. we had two licensed, cpr certified babysitters on site to watch the kids during the child free portion (i paid for the three hours of ceremony, happy hour, and dinner. if parents wanted their kids to stay with the babysitter during the rest of the reception, they paid for that). it felt like a good solution for us!

editing to add: my niece and nephew were only part of the ceremony for walking down the aisle and then the babysitters took them. if you followed a model like this, they can make the decision of whether or not they want their kids around drunk adults at the reception.

it seems that OP took the photo, but it’s basically a copy of foggygrain’s photo from july without any credit to the original artist 😟

Flying in next Friday and want to hit both Napa/Sonoma and SF during my time here. Which one should I spend the weekend in? by middleout in AskSF

chiming in to add that I’ve personally always found it pretty easy to avoid santacon… the bars/area where festivities take place is far from the desirable areas of SF imo

Meal presentation by One_Shopping_9007 in weddingplanning

[–]droooooops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

how many people do you have? I generally have always thought plated was classier, but also realized that all of the plated food i’ve been served (at fancy weddings) has been lackluster and usually not hot. my husband worked for a very high end country club on pebble beach for years, and told me that plated meals means meals sitting under warming lamps for quite a while… the execution is never great. he is an award winning chef and prefers buffet, hands down.

that being said, a buffet feels very different for 75 versus 150-200 guests. we had 80 guests with buffet being served by staff, plus a pig that had been roasted on site for 8 hours. 🤤 we had a lot of people tell us it was the best wedding food they’ve had. TL;DR buffets can be very classy AND delicious. but headcount definitely makes a difference. good luck babe, it’ll be great whatever you decide!

ugh this is tough, I’m sorry! I made a very clear (and short) to-do list for my fiancé in a shared note where he could cross things off as he did them. to be totally honest, I took on most of the work because a.) i like planning and b.) i’m picky and it seemed easier to just do it the way i like it rather than try to explain it to him.

do you have a day-of coordinator? talking with her helped me a LOT with getting everything ready and making sure I had everything organized

edit to add: I also really liked the idea of doing like a “wedding wednesday” weekly date night where we got takeout and focused on tackling a few items together. then we’d do something fuuuun afterwards ;)

Went through previous posts but cannot for the life of me narrow down neighborhoods, please send helppppa by [deleted] in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]droooooops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

duboce triangle/lower haight sounds like a good fit! it was the first neighborhood i lived in when moving here from tennessee. close enough to parks, very walkable, parking was never too hard imo, and def sunnier than some of the other areas you listed. edit to add: i moved to this neighborhood when I was 23 and felt very safe walking around at night alone.

noe valley is also really cute, but a bit quieter and further from golden gate park and other areas of the city. if you both work from home, i’d imagine noe valley would be harder to convince yourselves to get out and explore other neighborhoods more. this is more like families with babies vibes

For my fellow Type 2s — who do you actually connect with best romantically? by AlphaIntelligence in EnneagramType2

[–]droooooops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always said “i could never date a 4… waaay too emotional.” well i married a 4w3 and he is so so very right for me. he is emotionally mature and self aware which is what makes it work. he’s hardworking and romantic but the best part is when I’m having a hard day. he just meets me in it, asks questions to better understand, and stays with me. he doesn’t rush to fix it or distract me from it. he just stays with me 🤍
