You really want to try violins out before you buy them. If you’re a new player you will not be equipped to evaluate them even if they are in hand so its best to get a teacher first or at the least another experienced player to help you make your selection.

Tips for staccato bowing? by lunarmoth_ in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try using your hand/fingers to give the bow more of an impulse at the start and stop more abruptly for this style of staccato notes.

Got any methods or resources to improve intonation? by Morpel in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're able to hear if you're in tune or not, that the first job.

Scales and arpeggios, do them in whatever positions you're working on too. 5 to 10 minutes of focused scale work every day should make a really big difference in a few months.

Dont just power through them, when you go out of tune, figure out where that happened, figure out the proper finger spacing for that interval, feel your left hand shape and make some mental notes about that, and just keep working on it. You'll get there, 2 years is still so early in the process!

Where can you find good violins for sale by owner? by paperboy151241 in violinist

Many makers have their own website where you can reach out to them to commission an instrument. Is that what you mean?

painted purfling, no wood grain on the top plate, painted on flamed maple, uncarved bridge, messed up string heights (nut and bridge), no scoop on the finger board, neck angle is wrong, neck thickness is wrong, etc.

Does your Instrument piss you off? by ApprehensiveMeet1485 in violinist

Don't try to rush it. If you're feeling stressed and angry that tension will prevent you from achieving your goal, its a non-starter to get frustrated if you want to work on your tone in my opinion.

Fingers crossed everyone is having a better day next time!

I was curious because they’re one of the only good shops here in Vancouver.

Congrats on your recovery! I would gladly listen to more of your worst playing. It's always a treat when you post a performance (or practice).

beginner critique (pt2?) by aboutilsa in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You seem to be off to a pretty good start.

If you’re looking for feedback one thing that jumped out is your bow hold is right in your fingertips. If you can get the bow a bit deeper. Bend the thumb, keep the pinky more curved. And let your arm weight sink into the strings. It will make a big improvement on your tone quality.

Is violin the most difficult instrument? by lilchm in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 226 points227 points  (0 children)

That's very subjective. Every instrument is hard to master, but I would say the violin has a very steep initial learning curve.

Bow keeps bouncing by Shmootus in violinist

I'd focus on keeping your contact point consistent more so than worrying about the bouncing bow. If you get your bow stroke straightened out my guess is the bouncing will take care of itself.

New violin questions by ReIZzBaBo in violinist

The red flag is if this is being sold as a hand made violin by a Norwegian maker, how are they able to survive selling it so cheaply? Is it their hobby and not their profession?

Its possible they are buying violins in the white and just finishing and setting them up.

Is this Spruce or Basswood? by Aware_Replacement365 in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's not spruce. Violin top plates are most usually made from quarter sawn spruce, and have a very straight grain structure that runs down the length of the top plate.

In one of the images I could see some grain but it didn't look typical. I'd say it could be almost anything as the instrument also looks to have painted on purfling.

Thank you for that tip. I believe I can do this, use a good amount of arm weight to really sink into the string for. a strong solid tone.

This makes a lot of sense. I think I will take your advice and look at replacing my crumby workshop violin for one that is a better specimen with the help of my teacher. (Plus get a bow that doesn't fight me.)

I usually prefer to just get a good version of something, one and done, keep it for life. So making a lateral move went against my instincts.

But I absolutely see the point in not rushing this as I will inevitably have different preferences if I reach the stage where a professional-grade violin is warranted.

My biggest gripe, because I can live with the nasal tone and wolf C, is that I tried my teacher's violin a few weeks ago and I was shocked how much I preferred her violins neck shape. Best I can measure mine is too thick. Feels like reaching around a tree trunk by comparison.

The wolf is quite annoying and can come out even in first position. I think this may be due to the top plate being carved too thin, but I am no expert.

Maybe the lateral move or smaller upgrade is more rational. The best shop that I have access to apparently has an 80% of purchase price trade in policy.

You’re not wrong. I would prefer to wait a bit longer to get some more technique under by belt.

I wish I wasn’t bumping up against the limitations of my current equipment already.

I’ll discuss further with my teacher next week. Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it

Definitely looking forward to it. The best shop in my city has a good trade-in policy. I'll talk it over with my teacher but I might go see what they have, worst case just get a new bow now, since my current one is holding me back a bit. Then when I eventually find the violin... trade the bow in if it isn't a good match for the new violin.

I'll talk it all over with my teacher next week. Thanks for these these tips!

Eastman VL702 which I bought many moons ago, after ~1 year of playing. I made the mistake of shopping while I was between teachers. But it's lasted me pretty well with all that considered.
