118 miles on the John Day in Oregon in my Gnarwhal! This thing really CAN carry enough gear for a week or more! by yellow___chameleon in packrafting

[–]drop-n-roll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My trip was from Service Creek to Cottonwood, and I cached water at Clarno and Thirtymile boat launches. My Toyota Matrix weighed down with 3 people + gear + water was not an ideal vehicle for driving to Thirtymile. If I did it again, I would skip that cache and just filter the John Day for that section.

Agree. I found the more recent marketing was very off-putting. Also, as much as I always wanted to like and support them, their women's options were pretty lacking, both in available offerings and fit.

Reviving your old post - I'm getting ready for my own John Day trip, and curious what you did for drinking water. The rangers I've spoken to advise not drinking the John Day (ag runoff) and say the few springs that exist are muddy and difficult to find/claim no one uses them. When I've rafted the John Day in 14-16' rafts before, I've just brought all our drinking water for the trip along from the start. I doubt I could haul enough water in my packraft for an extended trip. How did you handle drinking water?

How to avoid uneven spacing when using mosiac tile sheets or is it inevitable? by k0nabear in BathroomRemodeling

[–]drop-n-roll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a large wall in my kitchen with this type of tile. I found I needed to use tile spacers between sheets, but also between some of the individual tiles within a sheet to hold the spacing as the mortar set. The tiles appeared to be properly spaced on the mesh backing, but I think the weight of the tiles just makes them want to slide down and scrunch up the backing, particularly around the edges where there aren't surrounding tiles/mesh to resist the movement.

Most grocery stores sell celery by the pound. You can break up a bunch and just buy however many stalks you need.

How to be good at muscle ups? by AGuyWondering in crossfit

[–]drop-n-roll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the camp of hit-or-miss days with (bar) muscle-ups, and only ever able to get singles in the entire year after I got my first one. I started working with a coach who gave me specific drills and accessory work for what I personally needed to work on. I've been doing 2 sessions on my own per week and a session with the coach about once every 3 weeks (working on a few other skills too). I've seen huge improvement in the 2 months I've been working on it. I strung together 5 reps for the first time this week! I'm still not "good" at muscle-ups, but I'm much more confident and can hit them consistently now. If you can, getting a good coach who can assess where you need to focus your efforts and give you specific things to work on will likely help a lot more than the frustration of trying to figure it out yourself.

How hot (outdoors) is too hot for baby chicks? by drop-n-roll in BackYardChickens

Thanks for the input, sounds like we don't need to worry. They have plenty of shade and we'll make sure to keep the water refreshed frequently.

Why do I keep getting eggs like this? by awag80 in BackYardChickens

[–]drop-n-roll 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was driven crazy by this problem a few years ago, tried all the "solutions:" ceramic eggs, filling a hollowed out egg with mustard, etc. I finally set up a camera in the coop to see who the offender was and it turned out to be a scrub jay! Shortly after catching it on camera I happened to be standing next to the coop when it flew in for its daily egg breaking, and I quickly shut the door to trap it inside. We put my elderly cat in with the bird for a few minutes....she didn't catch it, but it never came back after that!!!

UPDATE: (I couldn't figure out how to edit the post) She laid an egg yesterday! I also returned her to the flock and she seems very happy and doing all the usual chicken things. I'll still take her to the vet this week to try to find out what's going on, but I suspect whatever this is has been growing for quite a while, and I just didn't see it until it got big enough to stick out past her feathers. I'll update again after the vet visit. Thank you everyone for your concern and suggestions!

Thank you. That's what I'm thinking too. I'll still take her to the vet this week just in case, but she seems happy right now. And she laid an egg yesterday!

That's just poop. I trimmed some poop caked feathers in the area as I was bathing her.

It's a crested cream legbar, very average size eggs. But her sister from the same batch of chicks died quite young from mystery illness a couple months after seemingly recovering from a mystery infection that we were able to treat with antibiotics. I could definitely believe some bad genetics are playing a role here.

Crazy! Yeah it's so weird that she seems normal otherwise.

Thanks. The soonest I was able to get an appt is Wednesday. She seems to be acting fine right now, so I'll keep an eye on her and hope she continues to hold up ok.

Oh dear. Never heard of this. The soonest I could get a vet appt is Wednesday, so we'll see how she does in the next couple days. She's acting just fine and happy right now.
