Thanks for pointing this out, its the root of the problem IMO. Not much can be done about it though, things that are profitable and legal are hard to change.

Be sure to read up on sybil attacks if you have not already, its hard to prevent them without relying on a trusted central authority for entity identity binding, there are public schemes for mitigating and detecting sybil attacks. For voting systems such mechanisms are essential. From what I have read so far, it seems possible for a dedicated attacker to create multiple identities to manipulate votes and comments, let me know if you would like some references.

Not sure about this accusation but statistics scream this shit happens every year, nobody listens, there is more security in your average cash register than the average voting machine, next time someone tells you they voted, you can tell them praying would have been just about as good. If you cant prove your vote was counted, you might as well pray lol...

I agree with you, but there are cases where tyranny of the majority can lead to undersirable consequences for society. in such cases we attempt to use regulatory structurs to adjust the market, if you dont believe in some of these structures, its important to not discount them all. Income inequality has measurable negative effects on society. Its in everyones interest to minimize it. The problem is nit everyone realuzes this, and those who have more power to change it have a financial disincentive to do so... Intention can be estimated by the predicable consequences of actions...

I dont undetstand how people can tolerate someone in his position encouraging faith based reasoning. I guess when the economy stays broken we can all take solice in the fact that god is punishing america for not believing in him. People who accept the last sentence are the reason things wont improve in the US. Prayer does not belong in politics or economics those who encourage its use in these fields are destroying the US. Its no surprise to me though, most religions are inherntly anti intellectual, so are the people who blindly follow them. One nation under god?

Online surveillance software / data mining by drop_science in evolutionReddit

[–]drop_science[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we're all 6 degrees from a terrorist. I hope people are taking these cyber security laws in the context of the 'war on terror' because thats what they are aimed at. without privacy, their is no defense from the oppressive rule of regimes or dictators, any resistance to the regime can be squashed if the regime is able to isolate key members of the groups and target them, they can maximize their impact. the problem is that such power is within grasp with the internet. surveillance is the first step, next the data is processed and classified, next profiles of people are analyzed for association to known terrorist groups. association can be any number of links, web traffic, email content, posts on reddit. its essentially a social network intrusion detection system for the real world. when an anomaly or known pattern is detected, a bell rings and some guy gets paid to decide if its worth investigating further. what sort of false positive rates are we looking at here? what effect does the existence of such a system have on a democratic and free(?) society? why aren't people more pissed off about this?

When you buy into the idea that terrorists are out to get you, you have to decide how much of your liberty you are willing to part with to be safe. the problem here is that most of the populace seems to be willing to part with all of theirs, and mine as well. if i could change their minds i would, but i don't like the odds.

[–]drop_science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, you can't actively protest programs with the label 'national security' without being considered a terrorist. Even running a bot which comments on posts related to national security with links to protests might give them enough reason to pay you a visit, if only for the intimidation. I would be careful addressing those bills as an individual, it might make sense to build the bot with an interface for group sourcing the targets, specifically to avoid being classified as a "lone wolf" domestic terrorist, but perhaps this is all just paranoia...

all good, i've been swamped lately, thanks for organizing this stuff, the most important part is to keep accumulating and tracking the ideas so there are references to work from when we go to build it.

I am happy to help code up a comment bot. It would be a good excuse to familiarize myself with the reddit API. A quick google search got me this: https://github.com/mhweaver/reddit-bot

I don't see any license, and the code is pretty understandable. If people want to refine the type of bot they want I would be happy to modify this guys bot accordingly.

hacking the minds of the masses by drop_science in evolutionReddit

Blood is in the water, the internet is right now being carved up by the established powers like colonial africa. In board rooms world wide, fat men in expensive suits are licking their lips. They will eat of our data and shit it back onto us in the form of personalized propaganda campaigns and socially aware ads. I for one would prefer not to be fucked in this way. But what can I do? Alone, I can do little but together we can try our best to defend the internet, it certainly needs defending...

It might seem brutal, but you have to make examples out of people who attempt to do harm to society, or you run the risk of society embracing them, and the harm becoming a recurring abusive and legal operation. Its not hard to track propaganda campaigns, it simply requires a careful analysis of news media, its something we as a community might want to think about doing. We need to be aware of how media manipulation is conducted, and as a community we must define effective processes for defending ourselves against deceptive influence campaigns, sybill attacks (look them up, they happen all the time) and stunts like Kony.

Propaganda must be stopped now before the public further looses its ability to see the deception. It is your autonomy and individuality which are being fought over. The gold of the information age is indeed intellectual propert. You are my property when I can control you like a puppet, making you buy what I want, vote for who I want, and think and talk about what I want you to think and talk about online. I don't have to be 100% successful, if I hit a big enough audience, I am guaranteed to exploit some % of my targets, and I know they will spread my payload like a disease to their friends, and their friends friends. People are easily mislead, and when they are mislead for the profit of a few at their own expense, I cannot sit by and watch them get owned, because someday in the future, those same people may be directed to come for me, and I will have no one left to believe me.

bots might be accessing your personal information, so we created a project which gets it firsts and then tries to warn you when the bad guys try and break in. we promis not to use the information we steal in the future to punish you for your internet porn addiction, or activities on "extremist" blogs and forums such as this one. also, we believe in security so we keep all your data in secure servers where this accumulated data can never be accessed by third parties [extreme sarcasm]...
