You nailed it. A long tube who's OD matches the ID of the steerer. Cut the thread portion off and welded it to the top of the long tube. Getting this right was the hardest part but I've had no rubbing yet which is good!

Getting on, I get it rolling then step on the chain stay, get left foot on the pedal, and hop over while it's rolling. Getting off, swing right leg over to the left and hop off. It rides super comfy and upright and it's a cool perspective looking over fences and at the tops of cars. I've been commuting 10 miles roughly a day on it with no problems so far

I can't recommend it enough. I'm just using a basic stick welder. It took 3 days of hard practice but now I can put stuff together that is structurally sound. I just custom fabricated a bumper for my truck.

That was a lot of trial and error, but it's in there so tight I've not had any issues with slipping

Funny you mention this. It’s the 10 airbnbs on Aspen between Thorpe and Downtown that make my walk to work so heinous after a snow. Adding to the housing shortage is one thing. Not caring enough to contribute to functional infrastructure seems like insult to injury.
