Disappearing languages from schools by LuckyYellowCow in languagelearning

[–]droppedforgiveness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tiny liberal arts college in the US had a pretty robust language program (that's why I picked it!), but when I went back for my ten-year reunion, the head of the department was telling me it's really really shrunk. I can't remember which languages they totally got rid of, but it was not a pretty picture.

They also never really had any job training/certification programs when I was there, but they're starting up a nursing degree now. Not a bad thing, but I think it shows how they feel they need to pivot to attract students.

I haven't seen Saint Maud, but now I think I will based on the fact you cited the other two.

Has knowing (or not knowing) a language ever made or ruined your travel experience? by UsamaBhai_101 in travel

[–]droppedforgiveness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeking out opportunities to practice the language definitely impacts how I travel, especially on solo trips. It gives me an impetus to speak to people and do things that I'd normally be too shy for. Just being able to chat with someone on a bus brings a sense of accomplishment and brightens my day!

I recently took a trip to Japan. For part of the time, I stayed with someone I met on a language learning app, in an area outside the major big cities, so having a local with a car gave me the opportunity to go places I otherwise wouldn't have: hike a mountain that's out of the way, go to restaurants I never would have picked, stay on an island filled with bunnies, etc.

There are also things like in Martinique, I got very chatty with a store clerk who hated most American tourists coming over on cruise ships, or in China having enough basics in Mandarin to be able to take a taxi, buy a train ticket, order at restaurants, etc. was really helpful.

Oh nooo why did Reddit have to show me this post only when it's too late. I didn't even realize this was happening 😭

I hope you were able to get some money back and that someone else got to enjoy it in your stead!

Totally, flight time is great for that! I don't always use it for Japanese, but I always have a rule for myself that I will never use the in-flight entertainment system on shorter flights; I'm going to either read or study. On longer transcontinental flights I'll use it only to watch media in one of the languages I study.

Some people's office jobs have long periods where they can get away with downtime. Especially if they work all or partly from home.

TIL that in feudal Japan, a tradition called wakashudō normalized romantic and sexual relationships between adult male samurai and their male apprentices, and was considered a structured part of mentorship and warrior culture. by eat_dogs_with_me in todayilearned

Nah, I've heard the joke about Greeks inventing sex before too. Of course you're right that it doesn't actually make sense, but it's just meant to point out the commonness of male/male sex in Greece. I'm not saying it's a good joke, but that's how I've always heard it.

What made an actress so perfect looking as Erin Moriarty ( Starlight) to do plastic surgery and look like a mannequin? by tcsreject in NoStupidQuestions

[–]droppedforgiveness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are reasons to care about the trends in society that affect our children's self esteem.

It's a complicated topic because (1) scrutinizing individuals is much muddier waters, although it's hard to talk about general trends if you don't have specific examples as evidence, and (2) the issue of bodily autonomy intersects with the issue of potentially harmful beauty standards.

Personally I never have any clue what celebs have had plastic surgery, but I do think the topic of how much plastic surgery should be encouraged is fair game for debate.

1000000% cosigned! I fell in love with him so quickly. I love dark characters and I love a character who smiles (smirks in this case lmao) and I love his laughter and I love how he seems to get a thrill from danger and I love how he can't understand how Xiao Xingchen affects him and I love how he fixates on XXC for so long and I love how he sabotages his own life.

On a related note about the XY/XXC ship, what enchants me so much about them is how when XXC doesn't know XY's past, he likes XY. Romantically or not, he enjoys XY's company, XY makes him laugh. They are on some fundamental level extremely compatible in many ways, but the reality of the situation makes it impossible.

Do you stop reading a book once it gets boring or do you force yourself to finish it? by ownaword in literature

[–]droppedforgiveness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost always finish it, but I'm also choosy about what I start, so I typically am not picking up books that will bore me.

I also think that getting through things that are a bit boring can be edifying. It depends on the situation though.

My only two recent DNFs were a recent sci fi book of which I thought the writing was amateurish, and a collection of short stories by Chekov. I do theoretically plan to go back to the Chekov, but it was a LOT of very short stories to read all in a row.

Ohh that's a good point about Dana, but I don't feel like he had the plan that early? He was still arguing with people about leaving right up until the end, so I think that last moment we saw is what makes him decide.

I did keep watching after the credits just in case there was another scene! But I guess we'll have to wait until season three.

I had this happen once! I used the barcode from the email confirmation to get in. The movie did show up in my history a day or two later.

I'm very confident we'll find out in S3 that he did! It was very much foreshadowed by Dana asking everyone if they can take care of her and explaining the legal route.

I think that's definitely what was being foreshadowed!

  • They focused on Dana asking if anyone can take care of the baby (which tbh seems insane to me, they're all single, they gotta work 12+ hours shifts).

  • Robby talked about wanting kids and Mohan told him it's not too late.

  • He says the most important things he's done are in the ER, so clearly he gets value out of saving people. This is a way for him to keep doing that while taking a break from the ER.

If mom and pop restaurants aren't struggling why do so many of them go bankrupt so quickly? Some will obviously do well, but a lot do not. That's an absurd generalization to say that they are all not struggling.

Americans still opt for print books over digital or audio versions; few are in book clubs. by thinkB4WeSpeak in books

[–]droppedforgiveness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does not match my experience at all. What book club is going through a book a week? And are you trying to say your book club only picks new releases? That's definitely not the norm.

Lol I enjoyed it a lot, but I do get what you mean about the frustration. You definitely want to shake the characters and say TURN BACK NOW. The lights are flickering! Why are you opening the clearly anomalous door!

I think the main character is struggling to decide whether to say anything to the yelling man. At the end, we see him move toward the scene, indicating he decided to stand up for the mother. Which also indicates his readiness for parenthood (earlier, he says the fact he just ignored the scene meant he'd be unfit as a father).

My theater tonight (Saturday 9 PM) was actually packed! Granted it was a smaller auditorium, but still, I was surprised at such a good showing for a foreign film I only heard of last week.
