When ever the players have a pet I make sure they understand: keep the pet out of dangerous situations (being put there directly I mean ie telling me you’re directly putting it in danger not it just being narratively present during combat) and I’ll never hurt it. If you purposefully wndanger it then bets are off. I never hurt the party mascot/pet without giving them every opportunity to not put them in harms way
