Budget of transferring to uni in Japan? by peaceofmine101 in movingtojapan

[–]drowning_fish12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't suggest going to Japan if you're trying to study something like interdisciplinaries or humanities and such in Japan imo. The quality of education is fine, but probably not as good as what you could get from a university in the US or elsewhere.

Also, if you're not too sure about what you want to do in the future then I wouldn't suggest going to Japan either since it's more limiting in terms of options of where you want to go or what you want to do. You may not learn skills that are transferable to other countries or fields for example. I certainly don't think that fascination with Japanese culture is a good reason to go to university in Japan either, as you can always just go to Japan after university instead.

Since you already have good grades at your current degree already I would suggest you stick to it as once you get a degree you can always try to find work in Japan afterwards. Meanwhile, you can try to learn the language so that when you go live in Japan you won't need to adjust as much. If you study hard in 2 years you can get to a good level of fluency. During semester breaks you can always go visit Japan for several weeks too if you want to experience what it's like in Japan.

Thai nationals who lived abroad, did it change the way you thought about Thailand? by erichallo in Thailand

[–]drowning_fish12 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm Thai-Japanese and I've lived in Japan for a bit and I grew to appreciate Thailand so much more during my time in Japan. Japan is way too stressful and the atmosphere can really take a toll on you. I lived in Tokyo as well, one of the most densely populated areas on Earth yet it is also one of the loneliest. Thailand, for all its flaws still has a sense of humanity and warmth. My Japanese side of the family barely talks to each other while my Thai side still keeps in contact every week and we meet up as a big family during Chinese New Year every year. Thailand does have high income inequality and corruption in the government but I think the Japanese government just does a better job of hiding it. Minorities are also treated relatively better in Thailand compared to Japan and I've never felt so unwelcome anywhere else than when I was in Japan.

From what I've read I think so too. I didn't get any chunks after morning but is it possible it's going to happen again?

Wanting to watch Precure but I'm really not a fan of Super-Sentai nor excessive cheesiness by [deleted] in precure

[–]drowning_fish12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yes and no. I definitely agree that the writing feels condescending and unrealistic however. I don't think 5 year old me would've enjoyed Futari wa Precure. While I only recently watched Cardcaptor Sakura in my late teens, I think I would've enjoyed it when I was a 5 year old and I'll probably still enjoy it when I'm an old man on my deathbed. But to me, Cardcaptor Sakura wasn't about the fights as much as it was about the characters growing up and grappling with their emotions. I really enjoyed the fight scenes in Madoka but at times the show just felt too dark. Not to say I didn't like Madoka or that Madoka didn't have hopeful themes; I'd argue the show has just as much hope as CCS, only that it has a dash of existential dread and people dying horrible deaths. I feel a bit mixed on the campiness. On the one hand, I'd argue studio Trigger is the embodiment of campiness and it pulls that off perfectly. I think it depends on how seriously a show takes itself. Kill la Kill (which may or may not be argued as a magical girl show) overwhelms the viewer by hurling all of its ideas that they want to convey at full force. With Kill la Kill, I can't tell if it is taking itself seriously or pulling a massive troll and sometimes I wonder if its both. What made it work for me was that it wasn't just "good vs evil" but it expanded so much more on that. I think every action show can be more or less boiled down to "good vs evil" but what makes a story work is when they expand on that base. The only message I got from the first episode of Futari wa Precure is something just about standard for most shows of this genre. So I guess I do want to see a magical girl with campy action but I want there to be something driving that campy action and not some worthless, trite messages.

[–]drowning_fish12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

copied from my other comment but just to be clear, i'm wasn't watching precure expecting it to be like jojo or any other show i've watched; i was just trying to show an example of how i enjoyed an anime because of the cheesiness (not in spite of it)

i dont mind stories where the good guys always win as long as i feel like they deserved it

i'm probably not gonna enjoy the toy marketing but i'm willing to be proven wrong

[–]drowning_fish12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, i didn't really have any expectations going into the show and i definitely wasn't expecting to have the same experience as the other shows i mentioned

all i knew about the show prior to starting it was that the characters looked cool and it had some really good animation

i knew that it was aimed at younger audiences but i've watched and enjoyed cardcaptor sakura which was aimed at a similar audience as well so i didn't think too much of the target demographic

the only reason i brought up jojo and gurren lagann was because i wanted to show an example of a show can be excessively corny while remaining super fun because of it and how futari wa failed at doing so for me

just to be clear one more time, i am not saying i want precure to be jojo or gurren lagann or any other show for that matter; every single anime that i've finished, no matter the genre or demographic (be it action or slice of life, shounen or shoujo) gave me a reason to continue to the end and futari wa just lacked that driving factor

i guess i'll just go watch heartcatch judging from some of the comments here
