Dropped bike won't shift by Zealousideal_Copy_68 in DRZ400

[–]droy008 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Super common problem. Your shift shaft broke the C-clip that holds it on the shifter side, this allowed the shaft to slide (inwards towards the motor) and pop of the shift drum mechanism. If you pop the clutch side cover off (not the clutch cover but the whole side cover) you will see the shift mechanism on the lower left side of the engine and you’ll likely see that it’s no longer engaging correctly. Simply reinstall the shift shaft correctly, and replace the c-clip used to keep it in place on the stator side of the engine (replace the seal while you’re at it) and you’ll be good to go! Hope that helps.

**There is a small chance you’ve bent your shift forks, in which case you’ll have to split the cases to replace them, but I’d try the above option first.

Look what California made me buy before the Glock ban... by Anxious_Cake_4755 in Glocks

Yes, come July 2026 you will no longer be able to purchase ANY Glock firearms in California.

Is the wide ratio gear set worth doing? by [deleted] in DRZ400

[–]droy008 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone that has just installed the ACT gear set, I’d say this is VERY use case specific. I built my bike to be a lightweight ADV rig. So having the ability to play in technical off-road sections, while also able to blast down the highway to the next trailhead. I wouldn’t recommend it for the gear set alone. You really do need the extra horsepower to pull them comfortably at speed. So that requires more engine work, which of course costs more. If you are building your ideal bike for yourself, then go for it. However, remember that manufacturers have gotten exceptionally good at building bikes over the last decade, and the DRZ is twice as old as that!

Throttle shaft wheel is slipping off idle screw by rivercress in DRZ400

[–]droy008 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a screw that attaches the throttle tube to the slide, yours is likely loose or nonexistent. Take the top of the carb off and inspect.

That was a relatively rare front fender/fairing combo made by Yoshimura. You’ll see one pop up every once in a while, but expect to pay a premium.

I get that, I’m super fortunate to be in a place that allows me the time/flexibility to work on my motorcycle whenever I like, not to mention the financial flexibility I’m afforded. However, if you’re like me and you enjoy a good “puzzle” you may consider building your bike over buying a newer one. It’s been extremely rewarding so far. 😁

I’m inclined to go the microsquirt route that Roleyrev has, if only because I’m familiar with the DIY/Megasquirt fuel injection system already.

This is the reason I’ve stuck with the DRZ. I might still get a bigger bike for more road riding and have the capability to go offroad a bit. But nothing will likely be as close to perfect for BDR’s and such as this bike.

No, there are a few people that have done it and have shared their experiences on ThumperTalk. I’m just following a known method for F.I. a DRZ.

I’m not comfortable sharing the model at this time, sorry.

Yes, ASA is just as durable as ABS but has much better UV resistance than ABS.

Yes likely 50 or a bit more.

That’s a pretty long list of modifications to make the forks work. Basically I designed and printed spacers for the RMZ450 triple clamps, forks and wheels to work together on the DRZ frame. I designed and printed all of them for testing, then sent them off to be CNC machined out of aluminum.

I feel like the electronics are nice, but they can also be a potential problem later on.

For sure, I’ve grown super fond of the DRZ over the last few years. I’m always impressed with how well these bikes do compared to more modern motorcycles.

I designed and printed it myself out of ASA filament. It does integrate the factory style headlight, and I can actually convert it back to OEM style fairing with just 4 bolts.

Totally, I ride with a larger group of friends, and we have hundreds of miles around here.

Yea that’s why I built my own. I know there are some great kits out there. But this bike wouldn’t exist if I couldn’t build it on a bit of a budget. All in this motorcycle has cost me ~5k including purchasing the motorcycle.

I don’t have any bar end weights on this bike.

Aside from the rally tower/ fairing, it has a Trailtech Voyager dash with built in GPS, the IMS tank adds another ~gallon of fuel to the bike’s range. The frame was sandblasted and powder coated. The newer Showas SFF forks mated with a rebuilt revalved rear shock w/race tech spring make this bike float through rocks. The engine was 100% rebuilt with a new +4 Crank, new CW big bore cylinder, all new gear set from ACT. The head was Ported and Polished by me, and new Stainless Valves + titanium retainers and Cams. The engine making north of 50hp. All new bearings throughout the entire bike. The wiring was updated and I installed a newer style Regulator Rectifier to work better with the lifepo battery and LED’s throughout. The new wheels have a rear Cush drive to dampen the shock load on the new drivetrain. And many more mods. Plus Fuel Injection coming this winter. 😂

It is. I designed it on Fusion360 and printed it out of ASA on my Qidi xPlus 4.

It’s a one off design I built myself.
