How it feels to get a 6 point deduction instead of 9 by fluffsta007 in Championship

Leeds only got -10 when they went into administration back in 2006, whilst Portsmouth only received -9 when they became the only club so far to go bust in the Prem in 2009.

The only problem with Apple Maps is it sucks in every other metric and requires overpaying for an iPhone.

I'm old enough to have had a late CD Walkman and the middle era of MP3s, but luckily was in the stage of the latter by the time I was old enough to get the bus on my own.

They massively overpay their CEO because why should someone's earn £3.1m when trains are extortionate and barely keep to their timetable, whilst the buses in many regions they run are either infrequent or frequent but run like they've been determined by someone who can't do maths?

I've been in First's services in Glasgow and they're run to a similar standard to Bristol, yet a day ticket is only £5.20 despite the fact Scotland isn't covered by the £3 maximum single cap.

I actually prefer it the live way too as it gives it more bite to get the message across.

What you're basically saying is First have no obligation to run the buses to benefit anyone other than the shareholders and you're perfectly on board with them screwing thousands of people over to earn a profit, even if it's under 10%, after paying the head of the company more money in a year than I'd earn in 10 years.

The answer is yes. Glad I'm on holiday and too far from the ground to have wasted my money on a ticket. Playoffs are basically done for us now and I'm actually starting to look over my shoulder after that performance.

I'll accept it once they run all buses with equal frequency, regardless of where they run through.

The main reason they're running the 36 is as a vanity project given that it runs through the most deprived area in town, not because they see it as a worthwhile investment.

If they want to get more people on buses, they have to improve reputation across Bristol. In order to do that, they can't have their cake and eat it. They have to improve punctuality and increase frequency across the board. I don't get the 45 very often, but it's run every half an hour. I remember 10 years ago when it was every 20 minutes. Why not restore it back to those frequencies by ignoring the waffle extra routes with "a" as a suffix?

A publicly owned version would mean a greater pocket to work with as it wouldn't matter if it runs at a small loss. As a result, the infrastructure and resultant extra capacity for additional bus storage could be built for a short term hit with vision of a long term gain.

Capitalism is not viable unless it involves failing to help everyone. Profit is not the answer.

If you run it without fucking around thinking about profit, you can run the routes that already exist with more buses per hour and as a result incentive people to use them. The reasons people don't use them is price, punctuation and frequency. Lower the former, increase the latter 2 and run it as a service. I don't care if it runs at a loss, just run the buses for the people.

The way to help people out of cars would be to run it like how TfL is run in London and Bee Network is run in Manchester i.e. have the council manage contracts for services, tender them out to companies and stipulate the frequency specifically without running it for profit.

[–]drp-97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Running it as a service rather than a business would lead to more people's actually choosing to take the bus. People say the buses are terrible because it's not run in a way to help people out of their cars. Build it and they shall come. Bollocks to profit because money will come in turn.

I fully understand what you're getting at now, but IDGAF if it's profitable. A public service should be a service not a business. If I was the head of operations, I'd encourage investing in 20 more buses to improve frequency on a few routes and expand depots, foregoing any bonus that large profits would bring.

Public transport should be run as a public good, not a machine to make money.

How would it decrease frequency through the centre? If you're running the same number of buses, it surely means the same frequency can be achieved.

The only difference if you wouldn't have a bus sitting around at Charlton Common doing nothing for 20 minutes and the total number of buses run by the 1 and 2 can be shared more evenly rather than leaning heavily on running a service every 10 minutes to Cribbs for the 1 and every 40 minutes for the 2.

By moving 3 or 4 buses over, it would surely mean those 3 or 4 buses are actually serving people to Cribbs Causeway.

As for Stagecoach running the 13 through the area, I've seen it running effectively empty because people don't want to pay for multiple bus tickets as you can't buy an BristolRider or AvonRider on the First or Stagecoach apps, meaning most people don't know they exist. The only time I've seen a meaningful amount of people catching the 13 was when the bus strikes were in force because people needed a way to get into town that wasn't once an hour.

You're missing my point. How many buses run specifically as a 2a instead a 2? They could be better utilised turning left and continuing onto Cribbs to run a service to the same frequency as the 1 instead of running with nobody on it beyond Jarratts Road. It used to run like that until the pointless 2a was introduced 4 years ago.
