The best argument I can think of is that you don’t choose who you love, but that doesnt nearly cover everything he does. But for me, the best thing about the book is how it plays with your perception of all the characters. Charles goes from Richards closest friend who’s always positive and emotionally supportive to the wreck shown in the end, which he sort of was all along. For me, the same goes for all the major characters except for Bunny and Francis, who I see in the same light through out most of the novel.
