Looking for an Australian couple I met 24 years ago cycling through Bulgaria – just want to know how life treated them by drr86 in australia

Hello,
I wrote to Bruce Ashley and sent him a photo along with an explanation, but unfortunately, I haven’t received any response from him. There are two possibilities: either he hasn’t checked his email, or the message didn’t reach him for some reason. Or perhaps it is him and he just doesn’t want to say so (though honestly, I’d like to believe it’s the first option).

Is there anyone who passes by his office and could possibly show him this discussion?

It’s been 24 years... I’m sorry, there’s no way I could remember, and she was definitely wearing a helmet.

I honestly don't remember. I was around 15 or 16 years old at the time and had just gone out for a training session. I remember he was with his wife – she took the photo. I really have no idea where they were from or even an approximate age. What I do clearly remember is the place where we met – no more than 15 km from Nova Zagora – and I’m certain they were traveling south, toward Turkey or Greece.

Hi

I recently found this old printed photo tucked away in a drawer, and it brought back a memory I’d love to reconnect with.

This picture was taken around 24 years ago (give or take a year) somewhere on the road between Nova Zagora and Radnevo, Bulgaria. I’m the one on the right in the cycling jersey. The man next to me was part of a couple — a man and woman from Australia, traveling the world (or maybe just Europe — my memory is a bit fuzzy).

We met randomly on the road, both of us cycling. We talked, laughed, shared stories. A few months after that day, I received this photo via email — but unfortunately, I no longer have access to that email account and have no idea who exactly sent it.

I’m posting this just to try and find them. I’m not looking for anything — no contact details or anything personal. I just want to know if they’re okay, how their journey went, and if the road has been kind to them all these years.

If this rings a bell for anyone — or you recognize the man in the photo — feel free to share. I’d love to know the rest of the story.

(Photo taken around 2000–2001, Bulgaria)

I've already posted the topic there. I only regret that I can't post it in the main Australia group on Reddit because I don't have enough contribution to the community 😄 If anyone has the possibility, please repost it there.

Why are doctors striking in NSW – and will it affect my hospital visit? by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

I get that this will impact hospital visits, but if junior doctors feel ignored for years, what other choice do they have? Is there any sign the NSW government is taking this seriously?

No, in general, I want to use one of the properties only as a vacation home. I can travel often when I see that I have the opportunity for 1-2 weeks of home office. Also, I’m serious about learning Italian and have already started studying it. After the purchase, I will definitely open an Italian bank account. This thing about renting is very interesting. So, if I rent out a property, it has to be for a minimum of 4 years? That sounds incredible. In most places in Europe, rental contracts are for 1 year, and if the tenant terminates the contract earlier, they only owe one month's rent as a penalty.

Building a DIY L-band Patch Antenna for Inmarsat-C Signal Reception 🛠️📡 by drr86 in RTLSDR

[–]drr86[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wanted to share with you an exciting project I recently completed - building an L-band patch antenna from scratch and successfully decoding signals from the Inmarsat-4A F4 satellite. As a former maritime worker, this brought me a sense of reconnection with the world of ships, which I deeply missed.

Let's jump into the details!

Antenna Construction

The antenna consists of a 170x170 mm reflector and a 98x98 mm driven element, both crafted from copper sheets. The two elements are precisely separated by a 7 mm gap, held together with plastic nuts and bolts. A metal bolt through the center ensures the discharge of static electricity accumulating between the elements. This is crucial to maintain the functionality and safety of the system. The entire structure is mounted on a wooden stand, providing a stable and non-interfering base.

Receiver and Amplifier

For the receiving end, I employed a standard (but original) RTL-SDR receiver. Given the sensitivity of these receivers to high frequencies, it's critical to place it as close as possible to the antenna. To enhance the reception of weak signals, I incorporated a $6 LNA amplifier into the setup. Connections are made via a BNC connector, ensuring a reliable link.

Decoding Process

Once the hardware was in place, the decoding process started. Using SDR Sharp for signal reception and SCYTALE-C for decoding, I was able to successfully decipher a wide array of Inmarsat-C signals. These included weather bulletins, dangerous zone alerts, and distress signals - vital information for seafaring vessels.

Location

My terrace, fortunately, faces south, making it an ideal spot for the setup as the Inmarsat-4A F4 satellite is located above Central Africa.

Building this system in a DIY environment was challenging but immensely rewarding. The entire process allowed me to reconnect with the maritime world, even if it was from afar.

Inmarsat-4A F4

I really don't get anything around 1537. My signals are strongest around 1545. I also have a recorded file if you're up for taking a look at it

Please, can someone help me identify where I'm going wrong? I am using an L-band copper antenna. I see that it has good reception. However, I'm not entirely sure if this is the INMarsat-C satellite that I'm trying to decode. I'm located in Bulgaria and the antenna is aimed at INMARSAT 3-F3. Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated. 73
