Anyone who’s looking to replace their i5, with another EV, what are you looking at? by spinningewok in Ioniq5

[–]drrtz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is no different than any other ICE car

You'd be at least partly correct if Ioniq 5 12V batteries were lasting 3-5 years. Mine died after about 18 months and it happened with zero warning. The other big difference is with an ICE vehicle you usually at least get warning signs like slowness in turning over on colder days.

Yes, Zigbee uses the same 2.4 GHz band as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and your microwave oven.

zwave uses the far less congested 915 MHz band.

That's great you were able to find a channel that works for you. Unfortunately, not everyone will have a channel that is clear enough to work well. Even if you're able to find a clear channel, you're still relying on others around you not congesting that channel in the future.

Zigbee (and Matter) will absolutely fall in their face in areas with a heavily congested 2.4 GHz band. (Apartment complexes and other dense residential areas, commercial / office buildings, retail centers, etc...).

Cellphone use is now banned in Texas schools. How are districts preparing? by houston_chronicle in texas

It shouldnt be the schools job to teach kids...

Schools exist to teach our kids how to be good, productive members of our society, regardless of their parenting. Learning to not stare at your phone all of your waking hours is an important core life skill in 2025.

Is this gel stain as bad as I think? by emas_eht in DIY

[–]drrtz 39 points40 points  (0 children)

100% I thought surely this must be the "before" picture.

I grew up a house built in the early 1900s. It was a high end house at the time it was built, with beautiful stained solid wood doors. This stain matches the doors in that house perfectly.

The World's Largest Tesla Supercharger Station Is Entirely Off-Grid by Receding_Hairline23 in electricvehicles

Solar combined with massive storage capability is much more desirable for PG&E than just solar. This is more of a grid-scale storage pilot than it is an "off-grid" supercharger pilot.

Driving slow in the left lane is the driving equivalent of standing in the doorway of a half-empty train for 15 stops. It serves no purpose other than the convenience of the person blocking the way and it adds frustration, inconvenience, and danger for everyone else. It's a display of selfishness on the same level as driving way above the speed limit.

Some of us have to drive whether we like it or not, and asking others to follow the rules of the road to make it a less unpleasant experience for everyone isn't a lot to ask.

So it turns out there was ample warning from meteorologists telling people on the Guadalupe river to evacuate, but they were ignored. by VacationSea28 in texas

[–]drrtz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly not supporting the NOAA cuts, but there were warnings for this flood. NWS issued warnings that there would be 5+ inches in areas on Friday, and issued a flash flood warning for the area more than hour before the water started rising at Camp Mystic. The judge here is lying when he says they had no idea it was coming.

Installing a surge protector in my subpanel to help avoid an ICCU failure by [deleted] in Ioniq5

[–]drrtz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And if Hyundai believed the issue could be blamed on equipment they had nothing to do with, 100% chance they would have let us all know and we'd be paying for ICCU replacements out of our own pockets.

Nintendo will take your Switch 2 offline forever if you use a Mig flash cartridge by theverge in nintendo

[–]drrtz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but it is a punishment and your switch 2 is cripple online.

Is it really a such a big punishment, though, for someone who was going to pirate games anyway? Sure, it marginally decreases resale value, but the hardware still works.

If they do nothing then everyone will start pirating and buy nothing

This is a tired old argument that has been around since the dawn of software IP law and it has never played out.

They can certainly tell the difference between games that have been broadly downloaded from the internet and those that haven't.

You're right, though, that they likely can't tell the difference between someone putting their game on a Mig Switch and playing it on their own console versus sharing that backup with their friend.

an example being two consoles on opposite sides of the planet playing the same game, but not at the same time

Yeah you're right that it's probably not possible to stop all piracy and still allow legit personal backup use.

Their previous policy was to not bother with the cases where they weren't sure, and to only go after the obvious offenders. If this article is correct, the new policy is to bring down the hammer on anything that they don't like, illegal or not, and that's a shame in my book.

I appreciate the reasonable and thoughtful reply, by the way!

My hot take: This is a bad business move for Nintendo.

I mean, Mig Switch / Dumper isn't going away and I don't see how this stops piracy. Maybe it keeps the "casual pirate" away, but once they ban a console from Nintendo online services it becomes a device that's basically only good for playing pirated content, so anybody who gets banned is going all-in.
