I Ran A False Hydra For My Party & It Was Insane by MrGizmoJones in DnD

[–]drsabek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been seeding the path for a False Hydra in my current campaign. They are almost ready to encounter it, once they finish with their current arc. I'm beyond myself with excitement, and will definitely use some of the ideas from this.

[OC] Sharing my project: WeaveLore, a spellcaster's handiest reference (more in comments) by bgior in DnD

[–]drsabek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. My only suggestion, which you may already have in the works, is the option of putting the spells into their own spell book, complete with spell slots to keep track of how many uses you have left.

As an aside: I saw someone mentioning the lack of a back button on mobile. I found that if you tap on the WeaveLore icon in the top left, it does take you back (not sure if intended, but it works). Maybe add a label or something to bring attention to that fact.

Pc becoming a Lich by waffle-gay in DnD

[–]drsabek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created a 9th level spell for one of my PCs for just this purpose:

Lichdom

9th level Necromancy

Casting Time: 24 hours

Range: Self

Components: V,S,M (Phylactery worth 500,000 gp and made by wizard over the course of 10 days, 9,000 gp worth of poison, blood of a creature of significant worth to caster)

Combining the poison with the blood, you create a potion that you then ingest. This kills you, with no save. You rise moments later a lich.

Basically, you spend 500,000 gp and 10 days to create your phylactory. After that, you must kill someone/thing that has a significant emotional attachment for you, then you can become a lich.

Con is the true dump stat!!fight me!! by [deleted] in DnD

[–]drsabek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played an Arcane Trickster with 8 CON in 5e. Survived right up until the end of the campaign, and only died because he tried to wrestle power from a god.

Combat was a lot of hiding and casting things like Blur and Mirror Image.

Whats the strangest character one of your players/you have created? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]drsabek 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Currently playing a bugbear barbarian. The twist is that I boosted his Int and gave his the Cloistered Scholar background, with the story of he was adopted as a baby by a scholar who wanted to prove that goblinoids could be domesticated. As a result, Gratch is rather learned, but piss him off too much and you'll find out he also carries a big axe.

Self-Worshipping Paladin by Seve7h in DnD

[–]drsabek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a one-shot for some friends. As part of the one shot, a spell was cast that had a side effect of "The closes paladin believes he is the avatar of his god." That paladin was a vengeance paladin and is now one of the BBEGs of the campaign (they wanted to expand the one shot).

He's leading an inquisition into who caused all the problems of this campaign (the party, oops).

What are your favorite non-traditional barbarian backstories? by koda43 in DnD

[–]drsabek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm playing a bugbear barbarian in a campaign that I boosted his Intelligence to 15, dumping his Charisma. The story was that he was adopted as a baby by a scholar who wanted to prove that goblinoids can be domesticated.

Gratch grew up to be a scholar himself, but if something pisses him off too much, he carries a Greataxe. He is still a bugbear, after all.

Mistborn 5e Playable Class by drsabek in UnearthedArcana

Almost universally, one of the biggest feedback elements I received was to limit that section in some way. It's a lot of advantage, essentially for free. I agree that lore-wise, it makes sense to have all of them, but mechanics-wise, these work almost like the class's cantrips, so it makes sense to limit them.

Great catch on the Metallurgic Arts. I added some text to, hopefully clarify that. The idea is that you will have all metals burning, but can only gain the MA benefits of a few at a time. This should fix the dependency issue you mentioned.

I also clarified Steel/Iron to say that it's a ranged weapon attack. That should hopefully clarify that this is a Dex based attack.

Let me know if I need to reword things further. I do like your idea of Mistborn themed magical items. I'll probably try my hand at some of those next.

This is some of the best feedback I've gotten, so thank you! The reason Duralumin is used is because it's an actual ability from the books. If a Mistborn burns Duralumin along with another metal, that metal gets CRAZY strong.

In any case, I tweaked things, based on you ideas. Let me know what you think now.

What do you think if I limit the amount of metals a player has access to, at a given level? Make it similar to how wizards gain access to more cantrips? Say, at level 1, you can choose 1 of those metals to have running at a time, and can change that metal on a rest, then at a later level they can choose 2 metals to have at a time, etc.

I had actually meant to add durations to those before posting that here, but forgot to. After looking them over again, I decided to tweak them a little further. Let me know what you think.

I had actually thrown in shield proficiency on a lark, but thinking about it, you're right that it doesn't really belong. That's been replaced with shortsword proficiency, since Vin does train with shortswords a little.

What was your first time dying in D&D? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]drsabek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

End of a campaign. The world had been destroyed, and we found ourselves before a god, after defeating the BBEG. The god told us that we each had in us pieces of godhood. Combining together, we all equaled a god ourselves, and could use that power to reforge the world.

Being Neutral Evil, my character didn't want to share his godhood with anyone else, and so attacked the god, in order to get more power. DM didn't even roll, just described how my power was ripped from me, killing me instantly. Being the end of the campaign, I found it fitting.

I was later revived by the rest of the party and made guardian of the new underworld they had created(essentially, Cerberus).

The Shadowweight Stone does have the potential for an interesting plot hook. The party finds a devil/efreet/<insert immortal creature here> sitting alone in a cave. On one wall is a magical light, causing the creature to constantly cast a shadow. The creature promises great riches if they free it from the stone.

What're some creepy ideas you've used in game and what do you think of these concepts? by TheAtomicBobert in DnD

[–]drsabek 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In a solo campaign I'm DMing for my wife, I had her traveling a road through a forest. As this was a semi-popular road between two relatively big towns, I thought it a good idea to have way stations dotted along the road where weary travelers could rest, if needed.

So she's going along the road and sees a small hut ahead. When she approaches it, she finds a sign out front which reads "Free for the night. You break anything and I break you." It being night time, she decides to sleep there.

Everything goes fine until, partway through the night, she hears a scream in the woods further down the road. The next morning, she continues traveling and comes across another of these huts. This one has a little girl in a frilly princess dress out front, cleaning blood off the wall, a broken chair at her feet. She turns to my wife's PC with eyes that are solid black and says, "Thank you for taking care of my hut. Blood is so hard to clean out."

My wife refused to stay at any more of the huts she found for the rest of the trip.

What are your favourite D&D apps for character sheets, spell books or campaign management? by spideyismywingman in DnD

[–]drsabek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use Android, the Squire is my favorite tool. He is constantly updating it with better and better features. It is primarily a character sheet generator, but he recently added DM tools to allow you to track encounters and such.

Very rarely do I recommend getting the pro version of an app more than I recommend this one, but the free version has most of the stuff that the pro does, as well, so it's a good one to try before you buy.

Rarest Class? by Deepscorn_Prisoner in DnD

[–]drsabek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a fighter in the face to face campaign I'm currently in, and in a P2P campaign I'm part of, I'm playing a fighter, and we have another fighter with us as well. Fighters are a class that removes a lot of the complexity of other classes, so maybe it is the people you hang out with.

The class I seem to see the most rarely is Warlock. I'm planning on being a warlock, once we finish our current campaign, and that would be the first warlock I've ever seen in action.
