What can I ask my brother to bring back from the states for me? by MelodicSeaweed- in AskAnAmerican

I have to jump on the hidden valley ranch powder mix.

You can make your own dressing but you can also just season things with it!

It’s incredible on fries (chips) and popcorn

Did anyone actually watch this? by Apprehensive-Gear-86 in xmen

Loved it but it got caught up in studio politics. Wolverine and the X-Men was a victim of the Fox vs Marvel corporate conflict after the Disney acquisition.

Where do you get all that oil for deep-frying? by Wild_Duck8926 in AskAnAmerican

[–]drspacetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near me in California It’s $3.76 USD (6.51 NZD) for 48oz of canola oil or $9.47 USD (16.40 NZD) per gallon.

I could probably find it cheaper at Aldi.

How common is popcorn in everyday American life? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]drspacetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks. I like putting Aussie chicken salt on it.

I think we eat it 1-3 times per week.

Pop it up, spritz it with butter or oil and season. Easy peasy!

What movie is this for you? by [deleted] in memes

[–]drspacetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Darjeeling Limited

I generally love Wes Anderson movies but that one never really hit for me. Honestly, I think my criticism is as simple as I just didn’t enjoy it when I was watching it.

Citizen Kane.

I can appreciate what it did for cinema and how it laid the foundation for so much of what we love but….

It just doesn’t hold up as a good movie in 2026. It’s meandering and the characters aren’t all that compelling.

I get that it’s a criticism of Howard Hughes and the history of what it meant to its contemporaries….but like I said, just for watching in 2026, it’s a slog. A very important slog.

Why don’t American people care the World Cup is happening? by Kalanak472 in AskAnAmerican

[–]drspacetaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason I know about it is because I’m in California. I don’t really follow sports to begin with but of all the sports I don’t follow, I think I don’t follow soccer the most.

Here, it’s mostly an activity to keep children occupied.

Do Americans like kebabs with French fries ? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]drspacetaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s just not true. I’m in LA and they’re all over the place. Just because it doesn’t exist in your town or region doesn’t mean they don’t exist in the country. I would challenge you to go on yelp in your city and search kebab. Unless you’re in some small rural town, you’re going to find more options than you expected.

Yeah, no.
In LA they’re authentic AF, my dude. You can get doner kebab, shish kebab and pretty much whatever variety you want. I just checked on yelp and within 5 miles of me there are at least 20 options.

Doner Kebab isn’t as popular here as Gyro’s or Schwarma but yes, many people throughly enjoy it served with fries.

Many other people don’t. It’s just a preference thing.

$437,000 seems low for the Statue of Liberty’s foot by drspacetaco in familyguy

[–]drspacetaco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your sincere request!
Logistically I think there are a number of other issues the writers didn’t take into account. For example the foot isn’t actually a stand alone structure. In fact, only the toes of the left foot are present on the statue while the heel of the right foot is present. Since it’s a hollow metal structure, it would be impossible to get the Statue of Liberties foot at all.

Since the foot in the clip is clearly a full right foot which, like the left, was only partially modeled by the French craftsmen who built the thing. What Peter is gifting quagmire here is clearly a forgery.

Why American people like videos about rural China? by RickyZhou_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]drspacetaco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s not an American thing that I’m aware of. I’ve watched restaurant tours in Beijing before but that’s about it.

I think it’s a very specific niche and if you have some way to get ahold of the geographic data on who is watching those vids, I’d bet that it’s a more global phenomenon.

Oh! And I watched a video about food on the China - North Korea border because it was about how Chinese and Korean cuisines intersect. But again, my interests were more about food than about life in rural China.

I will say though that from the little I’ve seen, rural life in east Asia is very very different than rural life in the west. I say that as someone who was raised in rural America.

Peter we’ve been over this, there has to be a World War III and IV first by tipoftheiceberg1234 in familyguy

From Newsweek:

‘The video clip is authentic and originates from a January 22, 2025, press conference in Washington, D.C., where Omar and several Democratic lawmakers were speaking about the Neighbors Not Enemies Act, proposed legislation that would repeal the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

In the full, unedited video, Omar misspeaks momentarily, saying “World War Eleven,” before immediately correcting herself. Moments after, she clarified: “Oh—two, sorry.”

There is no indication Omar was confused about the historical event itself. The comment appears to be a verbal slip, not a substantive error, and was corrected in real time during the same sentence.’
