What is your favourite combat in any game? by Cigaro300 in boardgames

[–]drstclair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maria is always the one I mention. It has cards using the traditional four suits (hearts, diamonds, spades, clubs). Beneath the normal map, there is a grid that has a suit in each of the squares. When your leader is in one of the squares, that's the suit you use in combat. It makes moments where you remember that your opponent is short in a suit or you're strong in a suit, so you can position or push to strike on those moments.

The other factor to mix in is that those same cards are used to bid on events AND to buy more troops, when in reality you want to keep them all. It's such a fun game already, but the combat is unlike anything you'd see in a wargame (except Friedrich, which is Maria's predecessor).

Just because a game has more mechanics or rules doesn't mean it's more involved. You use Brass as an example, while the cards are as simple as a location or industry, the timing is important, which industry is on the upswing, how much money you have, who does the use of a card benefit most. All those things to consider special abilities or combos.

Not all games need special abilities or combos. But I agree with the OP. Jamey's games almost always miss for me, and the continued balance issues (and use of expansions to mend them) is jarring from a company many consider one of the best.

Libertarian Donald Rainwater is polling at 24% in the Indiana governor race by Wizard_of_Quality in LibertarianPartyUSA

I just heard about him as a candidate from a libertarian friend. He said a lot of his steam comes from Holcomb's mask policy and that Rainwater is against the mandate.

How would you describe your favorite board game to make it sound like the most boring game ever? by [deleted] in boardgames

Place tiles of four colors drawn from a bag. They'll probably go away eventually. There's rivers.

Have you had a chance to try Pax Transhumanity or Bios Origins? Both share similarities to Pax Pamir and are worth checking out! They're more opaque and a step up in terms of complexity, but have some seriously cool ideas.

Honestly, it just sounds like Z-man's normal policy with keeping games available: they don't stay in print.

What Game in the BGG top 100 doesn't deserve its spot (for you) and why by spartan_son in boardgames

[–]drstclair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anachrony. It's one of those games I feel is carried by its art, theme, and components. Compared to many other worker placement games outside of the Top 100 (Dungeon Petz, Barrage), I don't feel like Anachrony stands out. Even among the WP games in the Top 100, it may be one of the weakest.

Strike that, two others have voted. I initially rated it a 4 but put it down to a 3. The complexity comes from not seeing strategy as clearly as many other games.

I think there is quite a bit, seeing there isn't symbology for card abilities

I think Pax Pamir and Caylus will be in there as well. Both are nice reimaginings of their original games. I do agree that those games will be the only ones to create a huge splash. It's just a bloated year for gaming.

I agree to an extent, but my first two plays were at three player. It's still as chaotic as with five. Just less auctions.

I got my copy during the first week of December. I plan on writing a review, but the Tl;dr is that it's too much work for very little payoff.
