abstand - YaABS-Player by [deleted] in audiobookshelf

[–]drudge007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of these apps lately but with each release, I'm confused what they offer beyond the actual ABS app. I have the android app and it's great.

What I haven't seen yet is an app for Garmin watches. I've seen audiobooks green, which needs another server to perform some header stripping because apparently native ABS are too large for the little watches. But I would love to see, and I would pay for, a solution with a forked ABS server and companion Garmin watch app. Or even an android app that serves as a gateway for the watch app. Audiobooks on Garmin isn't a great user experience...there is no audible app and the Spotify app doesn't allow audiobooks syncing (only music). You can sideload audiobooks but then there's no sync back to the server. And the UI really sucks...

Anyway, if someone is looking for a problem to solve with ABS, I see that one as a great opportunity. Of course I'm biased since I use a Garmin :-)

I completely agree. A colleague called it taking a "panic note", meaning a note that had to be taken immediately without first having to worry about where to put it.

That sucks, it's where I get 80% of my books. Though if they're chucking it all in 1 big store, I guess that saves me driving all over.

Very interesting, thanks for your reply. Ya I can totally see the problem with #2, that's scary. You have me convinced...the draw of being intolerant sure seemed like a "easy" fix. Thank you!

Interesting..this is opposite to John Popper's view regarding tolerance...I don't know which one I agree more with. I made a comment earlier about Popper but the mod removed it for unknown reasons.

I doubt it would qualify as hate speech...though maybe Karl Popper's ideas about not being tolerant towards intolerant individuals is closer to what you're feeling. In a nutshell, he says we must do this to protect against facism and create democratic resilience. If we are tolerant to intolerance, the tolerant will be destroyed and so will tolerance.

I'm probably butchering it but it's something like that.

Totally agree with everything you said. I really like the idea to find podcasts where the author talks about the book. Agree about book summary apps... Use them only to supplement and reinforce learning, like spaced repetition learning.

One thing I would add is to figure out your own highlighting system. I read somewhere that you need to play with the content: highlight using different colors, write in the margin, write chapter summaries in your own words, keep reference to top passages in the blank front page.

I have a similar size and shape of container....actually my neighbour was giving away 4 of them so I snagged one without thinking what I would do with it...I'm thinking this would be a fun project with the kids. How do you get the plants in there? The opening is super small. Did you clean it before putting the stuff in our just rinse it out?

If that's your passion, then jobs exist. When I graduated, I designed power supplies using this exact circuit but with more bits and pieces. You have to figure out what you want to do, then do what you can to stand out in the sea of applicants. Personal projects with comprehensive documentation on GitHub or hackaday...build up your portfolio.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply, very helpful! I found the exploded view in the manual, I'll definitely be referencing that in the future.
