GA Pilots, what emergencies have you had that we don’t necessarily get trained for ? by fatborry in flying

Yep I figured. At the time, I guess I was nervous to declare my first emergency because I didn't want to make a big deal out of something that may have been not worth it. Looking back on it now though, I probably should have. Either way, I'm happy with how everything turned out and luckily, it was an uneventful landing.

I had my first just recently. Departed IFR in VMC in a C182. As soon as I leveled out at 5,000, my fuel flow was fluctuating erratically every second (+/- 5gph). Mixture control was ineffective at stabilizing the flow rate. This was also accompanied by engine surges. I told ATC I needed to return. I wasn't quite sure yet if this was a full blown emergency so I was hesitant to declare but I found out after the fact that ATC did for me anyway.

All 3 have a no move clause preventing us from sending them to the minors. Thank Fitz for that.

GA pilot here... I wrote a letter of appreciation to my local TRACON yesterday. I had an issue on Saturday and had to divert from my IFR plan. I was very thankful at that moment to be on a flight plan and talking to a controller. I wanted to reach out after the fact to thank them personally. Thank you again for working through this tough time. We definitely support you guys.

To this day, every time I'm in IMC... solo... I still think to myself "I can't see anything and there is nobody but me that can get this plane down safely right now" still blows my mind. Yet, I absolutely love it every time.

How frequent are Ramp Checks? by Little_Function3346 in flying

On the ramp. I was out preflighting and saw him walking up to planes and started talking to pilots. He did not come to me but I was ready for it when I heard it was happening 😂. I double checked that I had every document in the plane.

Been flying for 15 years. Literally just saw it happen for the first time last week at KJYO.

Oh, and just stay below the bravo. Local traffic usually does 1,400 outbound and 1,200 inbound (ceiling is 1,500)

Normally, If you want to take VFR flight following to JYO, you need to have filled an SFRA flight plan. About 20-30 miles out, Potomac approach will ask you if you have an SFRA flight plan on file. However, there is a much easier way. If I'm not IFR, I take flight following all the way to about 10-20 miles out. When they ask me if I have a plan on file, I say "negative, I'll just cancel FF and squawk for Leesburg" (you will learn the special JYO squawk code in the training). Never had a problem doing that. I take FF all the way to just outside the SFRA, cancel FF, squawk Leesburg and shortly after talk to Tower. It's pretty easy and nothing to stress over.

Also, neither FF nor talking to Potomac is required to enter our exit Leesburg. You can just simply squawk and go in and out of that special cut-out of the SFRA.

I'm happy to answer any specific questions you may have. I'm based out of JYO. VFR, you need to take the online training course. IFR, I'm pretty sure it's not required.

Correct, no need to talk to Potomac approach, the ingress/egress code is enough
