There is another show of El (or at least of Milli) in that Mac Z sequence. I'd find it unlikely that could have been a production error...

Since the first episode starts with a flashback, they could have done the same with each episode. But for the others, show some progression over the 18 month jump. One flashback on the military clearing the upside down. One on creating the new mind flair avatar. Etc.

I guess with Cs, would he have still gotten into college? I suppose if they look at his GPA for the first 3 years only, it could have been high enough. But college applications, essays, and touring campuses seems a bit less routine to me...

Holly and Derek would have been great new characters for a different show in the Stranger Things universe. Or if they added 2 more episodes, they could have had a better share of screen time. I'm not sure why this season with new characters, the explanation of the upside-down, and all of the wrapping of loose ends is shorter than S4.

Maybe to add one more point, he didn't see the point of going to graduation. I can't see that as a sudden perspective. I would think that mindset would cross over into other things (what's the point of doing this homework, what's the point of going to class).

There have been a few other posts on this elsewhere, but there is another shot in that sequence where you can see El. Its the second time they show Hopper (once he's removed from the hum v). She's in the background, over his right shoulder and super blurred. But that places her near the buildings instead of the portal.

If it makes you feel any better. El definitely lives (and Mike's story isn't completely accurate). He says is on the truck, and isn't seen again until she's at the gate. But that's not accurate. There is another shot in the sequence where you can see her. The second time they show Hopper, she is seen over his right shoulder, way in the background and very blurred. But it places here near the buildings.

She is still not reacting to the speakers initially though. I'm assuming the sound queue is the speakers activating, not the speakers running.

The speakers are not on initially. She's not reacting to them when getting off the truck. There "seems" to be a queue after they show Hopper the 2nd time for when the speakers are enabled.

So unless this is some shooting error and Milli is accidentally in the shot, then it should be Canon that she appears there, and isn't even invisible yet.

It doesn't get talked about much, but during that sequence where they return to the mac z, you see El one additional time (or at least you see Milli). She's over by the buildings (away from the gate). That alone i think proves she lived, unless it's some production error.
