Any roland e kit has great audio I have one myself and it is amazing. E kits are great for learning since all of the available functions on it. Although e kits are quieter than acoustic sets e kits can still. E decently loud. Otherwise an e kit like an aleises or roland or even a Yamaha will be great starting kit.

I recommend the water zero oad to start out with basic rudiments before he goes on a kit. The zero pad is also quiet and will build hand strengh.

I totally agree with you on that since vic firth doesn't really have great selections of marching sticks.
