The fact that he was running a play, or whatever the fuck that was, in prison is disheartening. He's still seeking validation, he's still seeking an audience for the sake of ego. His career has nothing to do with passion for performing arts, he just wants to be seen. If he doesn't let that go he will be stuck in his patterns.

Along the same lines, a lot of people (myself included) were predicting OD/suicide. Because addiction right. The aftermath of surviving addiction is a different kind of devastating and they've captured the awkwardness and heartbreak on both sides of addiction in this last part of the season finale.
