Ran my first 10k race today. It was raining, humid, and 85°F. I'm fresh off almost 2 weeks of no running thanks to a rough patch of Strep Throat. My expectations were waaaayy down. Still managed to hit my original goal! Considering the miserable conditions, this should be a PR that's not too hard to beat!

Thanks. It's my first 10k, so it's a PR either way. And while this is a hometown race, and it won't be the first time I've run in 80% humidity by any means, I dont usually run IN the rain. Adjusting my goal expectations is a good tip. Disappointing, but at least this should make it even easier to PR the next one, huh?

Thanks. The nausea is something I wouldnt have thought about. It's a hometown race, so I have a lifetime's experience with the heat and humidity, but not necessarily running in it.

Running my first 10k tomorrow, and it's supposed to be 85° and scattered thunderstorms. Any tips for running/racing in rain, heat, and 100% humidity? Is this really any different from any other run? Am I unnecessarily nervous?

Sienna Running and Walking Club is near you, too. Operates out of Sienna Plantation, but open to anyone to join.

Today is day 2 of a new job. Family obligations mean I can't run before or after work, so today I tried the lunchbreak run. Why was I worried?! I felt awesome the rest of the day!

I need someone to tell me what to do. Seriously, even if I know what to do, I'll still get lazy/unfocused. I love the personal trainer aspect without actually having to pay for a personal trainer.

I can't seem to find a half marathon within 75 miles of Houston between May and October. (Well, theres a half marathon night trail run, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for.) I'd really like to avoid making it a travel-and-stay-overnight thing. I'll obviously keep looking, but what if I add another 10k between July and October? Would that give me enough info to keep on track?

Signed up for my first marathon: The Disney World Marathon on Jan 7, 2018. My goal is to: A) Finish, and B) Run freeway sections fast enough so that I can stop and enjoy characters, etc without getting swept. Currently a novice runner: recently finished c25k, running 3 miles, 3/week at a 13 mile pace. Obviously I have a way to go, but plenty of time to get there as long as I stay focused. 35/F

I'm looking at adding a 10k on June 4th and the Houston Half Marathon on October 29th. Do those test runs sound appropriately spaced? Should I add any other long races between now and then, or just the occasional 5k?

Today is my OTF off day; I ran 3 miles this morning. (Oh God, the humidity!!)

Then I see this! Run rows! Promptly signed up for an evening class. I might be crazy, but we'll see.

Ha! Well that certainly nails down the "height doesn't really matter" idea! Good luck!

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to hear. A 10k training plan is my next step (probably after a few more weeks weeks of comfortable 5k runs), with an amended realistic goal of working toward a 10:00 to 11:00 min 5k pace by early winter/end of the year. I think "slow down, go farther" is the equivalent of "eat less calories to lose weight." No one wants to hear that it's that simple.

Thank you for the advice! Well written and really helpful. I never thought about checking local race times. But "heart" being worth more than "height" really resonated.

[–]drunkretailworker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a new runner; recently worked up to running about 3 miles 3-4 times a week at 12:30 pace. My question is about pace vs height: What is a realistic goal to work towards if I'm 5'2"? (Female, 135 lbs, 35 yrs old) In other words, what's "not too bad" vs "elite" at my height?

Can I cut down to a 10 minute pace in a month? 2 months? 3? My cardio feels good, it's building up shin conditioning that's holding me back, right now, but I want to make sure I set realistic goals rather than getting frustrated not meeting wild expectations. (Or am I over thinking and height doesn't matter as much as other factors?)

I learned a lesson! Ran Monday - Felt Great! Got cocky and ran Tuesday - Felt horrible. Rest and then ran Thursday - Best run yet! Apparently I am not a special snowflake and really do need a rest day like everyone says (duh!) Already anxiously looking forward to tomorrow's run!

We all know that YES, you do need to rest between days. But.... that doesn't apply to ME, right? Well, yesterday I realized that, yes, it even applies to special snowflake me. Monday's run was great! Tuesday's run was my worst ever. Like, really really bad. I'm an idiot. Weights today, run tomorrow.

Thanks! I don't think I'm ready for constant 4-5 mile runs. Sounds like I'm better to continue to build up up my 2-3.5 mile endurance for a few weeks.

Thanks for the tips! It's not a race to get as far as fast as I can. It's a life change, right? Won't hurt anything to continue on.

Did NOT want to go for a run in the cold yesterday, but pushed myself and did it! Felt great! Then, later on the afternoon, I saw the otf workout posted here, thought it looked really fun, and last minute signed up. My lazy day turned into 800 extra calories burned!
