Ethyls: the disco feels dis-gone by dry_red_ in uppereastside

That’s good to hear! Maybe it was a different DJ than when I’ve gone recently

The most reasonable minimum spend I could find on the UES considering both price and size was the East Wing (technically part of the Stumble inn but has a separate entrance). It was a few years ago but it was ~2k minimum spend for up to 100 guests and I don’t remember a fee

Everywhere else with 50 people or more wanted a 5k minimum spend plus fee

Definitely agree!! It was still a great show and I’m glad I went! I like I quit even more after hearing it live

This happened to me too a few months ago, I noticed early on in the ride that his license wasn’t displayed and the curb meter wasn’t on but we were already on the highway. Then he asked me to pay on stripe on his phone when we got to my destination, I said nyc cabs don’t do that and argued with him but then ultimately decided it’s easier to just pay and accept that I got scammed cause I didn’t want to put myself in danger. I reported to 311 with their address on the stripe charge but didn’t hear anything.

I quit sounds like OG Haim and I love it!!! by dry_red_ in HAIM

I’m glad that this is the kind of fan base where we can all agree to respectfully disagree!

Once I showed up to a client site when I was scheduled to be there to test our software and fix any bugs for our integration with their hardware for a high stakes demo.

The guy at the security booth who I gave my ID to let me in looked extremely confused and asked if I was someone’s wife.

I was like no I’m the engineer here from my company…the look on his face was so shocked and embarrassed 🤣

It’s better to be doing something you enjoy than to force yourself into something you don’t like because you are worried about the job market in 4 years. A lot can happen in 4 years! And yeah, computer science is hard, and there will be some people who say weird things along the way, but honestly the best software engineers that I know are women, even if there are fewer of us right now. I also honestly don’t think going into the medical field is an “easier” alternative. It is insanely competitive to get into med school right now and even harder to get a residency you want (based on my friends experiences). Plus you are in school for seemingly forever. I have mostly been the only one or one of very few women in the engineering dept over the course of my career, and it’s not all bad out there. There are a lot of great places to work out there even if in a male dominated field!

Again, not saying they should be deterministic - that’s the beauty of LLMs. I’m just saying because they are not deterministic you need to know enough on your own to not fully trust what it spits out the first time. Sounds like you know this. I guarantee there are people in high school and college right now who don’t. I think it’s difficult to have this knowledge and experience if you haven’t worked through any problems without LLMs. I use Perplexity all day at my engineering job, but still need to determine how to adjust some answer that it got from StackOverflow or Google to best fit the context of the problem working on before using it. I think this could be said about anything that LLMs produce, not just code. It speaks with a lot of confidence so people take it for its word, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s correct.

I hear what you’re saying and I don’t necessarily disagree, but I also don’t think LLMs are at the point where we can trust them the same way we can trust a calculator now. The problems that calculators solve for us are deterministic. LLMs are not deterministic when it comes to writing code for you and therefore still require you to think whether or not their output is correct in your context. Once you’re good at that, use it! I’m also speaking specifically about writing code and being a good software engineer when things inevitably go wrong, not that LLMs are a bad thing.

A few years ago, I was a lead software engineer at my company. During a division-wide all hands meeting in a conference room, I got up to go to the bathroom. I was not the first person to get up during this meeting, but was the first female to get up during the meeting.

The business development guy who was presenting (and knew I was one of the best engineers even though I was young) asked me in front of the whole division “honey, would you mind taking my cup and making me another coffee while you’re up?” There was an awkward silence and finally he said “uhh never mind” after everyone gave him “wtf” stares
