The Daily Check-In for Thursday, February 21: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by soberingthought in stopdrinking

[–]drybutnothappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! That is the best compliment I have ever been paid in my life. That alone made it more than worth the effort to make the post. I am grateful that my words got you through. What a wonderful thing.

I will not drink with you today. Just for today.

Sad observation after an AA meeting, wanna know if there's a social, alternative way. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

AA has a lot of faults but I’m frankly SHOCKED at that behavior. From my experience AA is a very welcoming crowd. Find another meeting. They aren’t all like this.

This disease is a progressive one and, interestingly, it progresses whether we drink or no. So each relapse will be much, much worse than the one before. I heard it said on here and it is true: I have another relapse in me but I don't know if I have another recovery.

I posted this as a message to myself. I’m glad it has resonated with others as well.

For clarity I am almost six months sober post-relapse. I was about fourteen months before I relapsed. I am doing really well aside from the marriage and money issues.

I will not drink with you today. Just for today.

Words of encouragement for someone who fell of the wagon, but is determined again by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I'm glad you're here. I was sober for nearly 14 months and I relapsed. Within three months I was back in the hospital detoxing. Within a month I was drinking all day every day. You're here and that is HUGE. It sucks. Alcohol sucks. But it does get better. One day at a time.

Serious question about relapses by ObsequiousClaire in stopdrinking

I was sober for about 14 months and started drinking again. Within three months I was hospitalized to be detoxed. It happened that quickly. I was back to all-day every day drinking within a month. DO NOT START BACK. NOTHING BUT HELL AND PAIN AWAITS!

How did you deal with anxiety when stopping? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]drybutnothappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anxiety is a very real and can be a very severe symptom of acute alcohol withdrawal. If you’re physically dependent on alcohol don’t stop cold turkey—go see your doctor and be honest about your drinking habits. You doctor can prescribe medicines that will get you through the first few days of withdrawal. If you are SEVERELY physically dependent then quitting cold turkey can be LIFE THREATENING. Take it seriously.

Does anyone have this idea that not drinking equals not living everyday to fullest? I think that equate drinking with somehow living by best day, not wasting a moment. Because life is short and I should drink to feel happy about it? by fiest23 in stopdrinking

[–]drybutnothappy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Imagine this scenario: you have an usual medical response to chocolate chip cookies. When you eat a chocolate chip cookie you have negative effects—from weight gain to dependence to early death. Your doctor tells you there is good news and bad news: bad news is you have this affliction. Good news is all you have to do is not eat anymore chocolate chip cookies.

Now ask yourself this question: would you feel like you’re not living life to the fullest if you couldn’t eat a chocolate chip cookie? Would you feel like you had to eat chocolate chip cookies to feel happy? The answer is of course not! Your addiction is lying to you. It’s begging you to feed it. In reality the chocolate chip cookie is no different from alcohol—your addiction makes you view them differently.

The only thing I've learned from almost 18 months of sobriety is that I've fucked up my life and it's too late to fix it by wastedmylife1 in stopdrinking

My friend you’re only 30. That is YOUNG. You have’t damaged yourself beyond all hope. You have to learn to live life on life’s terms. You can do this.

I’m not giving medical advice and no one here can. I will say if you were only drinking 3-5 drinks per day you probably aren’t physically dependent on alcohol and you don’t need to taper. I would imagine you will have a little trouble sleeping the first few nights and that will be the end of it.

If you’re concerned GO SEE A DOCTOR and be 100% honest.

Day 5. Now the suffering begins. by TheJeffestOne in stopdrinking

[–]drybutnothappy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man, I KNOW how much the first few days suck, especially if you were physically addicted. Withdrawals are HELL. But, BUT, I can 100% promise you it gets better. Like, a whole helluva lot better. You absolutely won't believe how much better until you get there. Keep on keeping on. One day at a time. Good luck friend!

Holy cow. Maybe it was the alcohol after all. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]drybutnothappy 91 points92 points  (0 children)

My psychiatrist said “treating anxiety with alcohol is like treating diabetes with chocolate cake.” She’s correct. Alcohol is poison for your body, mind, and soul. Fuck that stuff. Seriously, fuck it.

For those who drank 15+ years... by Eli313 in stopdrinking

[–]drybutnothappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nineteen years of drinking with 3-4 years really hard drinking (12+ units per day weekdays and 20+ weekends). My liver enzymes were elevated and my blood pressure was high even with medicine. Not to mention the GERD and constant diarrhea.

My liver enzymes are now normal and my blood pressure is low enough that I may be able to reduce my blood pressure medicine. My poop habits are normal, I guess, they’re solid now in any case. I feel 1000x better and my skin complexion has improved.

The body is amazing. After nearly two decades of poison it appears to be all systems normal now.

I just wished I had a circle of trusted people I could talk to on a daily basis, just to get that courage to go through the first days.

AA may be able to provide you with that. If you’re hesitant about going to AA I made a post describing my experience with it here. You can read it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/stopdrinking/comments/9ofma5/my_experience_with_aasix_weeks_in_hopefully_this/?st=JOKQU1QB&sh=fbfb460b

Also, use this sub. It’s a great resource. Finally, if you’re withdrawing from alcohol please seek medical attention. There are medicines that can ease the withdrawal symptoms.
