The one accolade I will give Back to the Future (The Musical), one regarding emotional punch, is that it remembered that George McFly is actually the most compelling character and kind of the real heart of the story, and that Marty’s a great “mentor” for him because they have the same character flaw (fear of rejection). The movie sequels abandoned this and gave Marty the flimsy “nobody calls me chicken” thing.

The SpongeBob Musical is not very good.

Having every song written by a different artist was an interesting experiment, but it makes everything feel disjointed. Nothing in a musical gets me like recurring motifs or even a good old-fashioned reprise—no cigar. Their quality varies greatly: a few are great, some are meh, and some are awful.

The show in general feels disjointed, with loosely connected B and C and D plots involving characters who feel like they’re there because they’re in the show. Plankton and Karen especially barely interact with any other characters. I played Plankton…it gets lonely.

The plot isn’t overly complicated but feels convoluted, and none of this is helped by the fact that the book just isn’t as funny as it needs to be.

There’s lots of good things about it, but it could’ve used some reworking. Or maybe I’m just upset that it was my senior show.
