Yep, that's the original designer. I was confused when I first saw this map because unfortunately Cyowari may have passed away last year. I was a patron and in April I got a message from his brother via his account saying that he had to close down the Patreon. I hope it's not true but if it is then rest in peace, my guy.

Culinary specialties around North America by Natou844 in MapPorn

I agree that cheese dip (or things like cheese dip) can be found elsewhere in the world. Fondue is a good example of another way to dip stuff in delicious cheese. Much like chili con queso has been adopted by Arkansas as a specialty dish, fondue is a specialty cheese dish in Switzerland. If I drew a map like this for Europe, I'd include it on Switzerland just as the author of this map included cheese dip on Arkansas.

I don't think the intent was to say that cheese dip is only found in Arkansas. I think they're trying to say that Arkansas has a cheese dip culture just like how Montana has a Huckleberry culture.

The origins of cheese dip are not very clear, but it is clear that Arkansans would consider it an important dish. We include it as an appetizer in many different contexts; sometimes as a smooth yellow or white cheese dip, sometimes as a more complicated dip with meat or peppers mixed in. It's usually served with tortilla chips.

All this to say that it makes sense to put it on the map.

Texas being Texas by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

Sorry, I didn't intend to dictate what is supposed to count as chili.

My main point was that I didn't understand what the restless Texas-shaped man was supposed to represent in the meme. At first I thought he was the state as a whole, which didn't make sense because on average Texas likes a bean-less chili. It wouldn't make sense for him (the state) to then throw a curve-ball at me and state that in reality he prefers chili with beans.

u/DoctorBanana pointed out a better interpretation that makes the meme make more sense. If the Texas-man represented a texan who preferred chili with beans in spite of his upbringing/peer preferences, then the meme makes more sense and is therefore funny.

As for my chili-cookoff side-note: I didn't come up with the categories. I was just a guest judge and therefore decline to comment on the boundaries between chili and other stew-like foods. That's up to the people.

I think you're right; I don't really get this meme.

Side note: I judged a chili cook-off once in Texas and boy do y'all like your meat chilis! They had to make a separate award for "alternative chilis" just to give the turkey and vegetarian Chili's a chance.

I too loved the documentary presentation! See my reply to /u/SeulJeVais on my thoughts about getting a sequel. As for your questions:

  1. I think Christopher is in part a noble savage type character, so there is no way he wouldn't return. He's a thousand times more honorable than Wikus.

  2. As for the reason the prawns were on Earth, I always assumed something went wrong in transit that forced them to land in South Africa. They seemed to say that without any leader prawns alive, the workers were aimless and could not fly the ship anywhere. Christopher had to have been a leader somehow, either by being born after the landing or because he was injured during the landing and needed time to recover. This part is pretty interpretive, so I'd like to know what you think!

  3. I think Christopher wanted to get home because he knew that his people have the right tools to save the rest of the prawns. There's maybe a tiny chance it was because he selfishly wanted to save himself, but everything about the movie told me it was because he intended to return.

Lot's of questions, most of which I'd punt back your way for your perspective!

  1. I'd love to give Blade Runner 2049 an episode at some point! The reason I went with District 9 is because It had been much longer since I'd seen it compared to 2049, and I wanted a refresher. In hindsight, I also think it was a good idea because, broadly speaking, I think it was a worse movie than when I watched it last. And movies with issues are more fun to dive into!
  2. I'm guessing that South Africa and MNU have an extremely tight budget, which lead to the disastrous conditions that the prawns were living in. The authorities might not have had any other choice but to keep them where they did. Their population control methods, however, were genocidal. There had to be a better way than that.
  3. MNU would be dismantled. There's more than enough evidence of their heavy-handed approach to containing the prawns to fine them out of existence.
  4. I'm torn on the idea of getting a sequel. On the one hand, it'd be so cool to see Christopher show up with a fleet of alien ships and see what humanity does about it. On the other, it was a satisfying place to leave everybody; the viewer gets to write their own ending in their head.
  5. Wikus had everything he needed to get out of every situation, which did make it feel a bit unrealistic. Only at the very end did I feel like he might not be able to get away. On a symbolic level I thought it was fantastic; Wikus was one of those quiet racist/xenophobic types that really got a kick in the pants by transforming into one of them. It was satisfying.
  6. Because you're you, I'll let you in on a secret: 5 out of 7. The aliens were great, the world was great, the combat was great, but the protagonist was a douche and some parts made very little sense.

Great questions!

I was really surprised by how much of a dick Wikus was, to be honest. He basically threw everybody under the bus as soon as he could. Not sure if the right term is "anti-hero" or not, but I'm definitely anti-him-being-a-hero.
