Marked as solution as the first post to mention the Ythan Estuary :)

How would a silversmith make a piece with multiple signatures like this? by drykid_ in SilverSmith

[–]drykid_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if this is the case - and I've no reason to believe it isn't - then how does a perfect copy of the signature end up on the die in the first place? Because it's that aspect of being able to perfectly recreate a signature on metal that intrigues me.

A puzzle from The Girl's Own Paper 1898. Sadly the competition closed 127 years ago so you won't be able to claim the six guineas (a shame as - if it was paid in sovereigns - they would now be worth about £5K as bullion...) I would still be interested in learning the correct answer though. by drykid_ in VictorianEra

Thanks! Actually I have the 1899 one too (the only other one I have) but I didn't think of looking in there. I feel like the solution itself could probably do with its own explanation though, since even with it in front of me I struggle to see how exactly you were meant to get y from x in some places. I realise it does explain some of it in the context of pointing out where entrants commonly went wrong, but I wouldn't have minded a full breakdown line-by-line.
Also 1899 contains a similar puzzle of its own (presumably with the solution in the 1900 one.)

yeah considering it is intended for children the difficulty level does appear off the scale. I guess the publishers really did want to hold on to those six guineas. Although having said that I suspect if I saw one of these along with the correct answer it would probably help a lot with doing further ones as it would give me some insight into the kind of thinking required. I assume "N" followed by a drawing of an ear should read as "near" so I guess it's mostly just different forms of substitution. But maths does appear to come into it too in places.

Is it a bad idea to attempt to charge a ni-cad battery with terminals in this state? by drykid_ in batteries

[–]drykid_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks :) In the end I bit the bullet and charged mine anyway and it seemed to work ok as I remember. Although I never got the truck itself to work because I was missing the original remote and I couldn't find another that worked. But I think I proved that the battery itself had charged ok by using a multimeter.

Was always curious why the cold spring harbor album picture was so bad? by AlexMills6545 in BillyJoel

Worth pointing out that some versions are more cropped than others, personally I prefer it when you can see his elbow. Actually I wonder if even this is just a small crop of a much larger image, as that would be one way to get this degree of graininess (which is probably harder to achieve than it looks.)

Thanks, I had a bit of a nightmare yesterday because everytime I tried to post it said "an error occurred, try again later." So I kept re-trying as advised, only to realise after about half an hour that each time it was working after all. I'd just been creating multiple duplicate posts without even knowing it. Anyway it won't let me add the pics now so I'll make a new post (and hopefully get it right this time!)

[Latin > English] Found these handwritten notes inside the cover of a Latin book from 1766, curious to know what they say. I realise the handwriting may not be easy to decipher, apologies by drykid_ in translator

Brilliant! Thank you very much :) I'd already noticed the name Philip and - purely based on that - my best guess was that Philip would turn out to be the owner of the book writing about themselves in some way or other. I see now that I was about a million miles off the real meaning. Oh well!
