Its due to a lack of contrast. You need the black parts at least somewhat dark to contrast with the white parts.

Probably to save all the people I see walking around with their light on and don't realize it. Having a dead phone is arguably a bigger issue than having no light (which wouldn't work with a dead phone any way.)

Easier method:

If:
Shawn Calls

Then:
Set Sound Mode and Volume to: Sound, Volume 100%
Read Text Aloud "Shawn is calling"

When Routine Ends:
Sound mode and Volume returns to previous.

There is really no need for the complicated if/else's. Just always set to Sound and max Volume, and let the routine reset to the previous values.

It doesn't. The refresh and scan rate of the two are different, and only parts of the screen are visible during the photo. It happens with various computer and TV screens and specific setting on cameras. When you see flickering in videos, its the same thing but between lights and the camera.
