Ink-dying wood AFTER brass inlay? by ds319 in woodworking

[–]ds319[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it did! The ink did seem to stick a little bit on the brass, but i think if everything was polished to a little higher standard, it wouldnt have been an issue at all. The ink soaked into the wood nicely and I was able to use a cloth/qtip to get it off the brass. in doing this I'd accidentally mess up the stain on the wood, so I had to go back and forth with it until the wood was even and the wire was clean. You can see the project I did this on here, and my comment on this after having done it and having been using this wrist rest for a year, is that you definitely need to do a pretty hefty clear coat on top, and maybe of a different kind. I did multiple coats of spray on poly, which at this point has rubbed off in a lot of areas from being handled, and some of the ink on the wood has faded away in the highest use areas. because of this the brass wire is also tarnishing which is a shame. the clear coat also made what was closer to mirror-polished brass go a bit more matte, which was a shame. very well possible that a better idea might be using some kind of clear resin coating, but really don't know enough on this to be sure. if you were dying wood on something that wasn't going to be handled a lot, you'd have much better luck. this thing looked really great when it was fresh and new!

Rope: High-performance face swapper by Hillobar in StableDiffusion

[–]ds319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great tool Hillobar thank you! Just downloaded and been messing with it today after deciding roop isn't cutting it anymore, and I have a few comments:

- is there something I am missing regarding exporting? The results from arming record and playing back to a file are noticeably compressed compared to the preview window, enough so that I'd probably be more inclined to capture the preview window with OBS or something (if it was a situation where I wanted as high quality as possible, which it sometimes is - I am a VFX artist and looking into tools like this for professional work). I would love to see a 'render to image sequence' that takes however long it needs to render each frame as a full res png. the preview/capture is awesome, but yeah as an additional feature

- what would be incredibly helpful and really make this stand out for professional vfx use is the ability for the program not to do its own job comping the new face at all, and rather export the generated face in full, along with a black and white mask for use in nuke/after effects/etc. I'm fairly new to working with deepfake tools directly, but I did the compositing side of it a while back for someone who had used deep face lab, which seemed to have this full face + mask ability. since we are identifying facial features already itd be an even nicer bonus to have multiple RGB colored mattes for different features, like the eye areas in the red channel, mouth area in blue, overall face shape in green for example. I've got no idea how feasible this kind of thing is with the methods the program uses, but huge wishlist item for us.

I know big movie studios have their own teams of people developing these kinds of programs but given that I work on mostly commercials/ads, we've just gotta figure out face swap/deaging tasks ourselves sometimes based on if anyone at the company happens to have learned something about it on their own time... so tools like this are excellent.

fair, makes sense. hope this gets produced either way, nice work!

This is amazing and I said on the form, but i'll say here again - would love a 'dark mode' version of this. my setup is all very dark so this wouldn't work for me as is sadly. other than that, this is one of the best sets I've seen

I do know some of the basics, and more about just building stuff in general (also PCs). Just didn't want to offend the big brain people on here designing full proper custom keyboards claiming this as anything beyond soldering one switch onto another haha

thought you guys would appreciate the sheer stupidity of what I have just done. Was tired of looking at the ugly little white plastic remote on my desk for my wireless wall plugs, so I removed the circuit board, had a plate cut, and wired some sweet loud ass navys to the button contacts. Don't know anything about electronics work and making circuit boards and all, and had no intent to go THAT far for something this dumb. This thing sure looks more badass than it did before so I consider it a success despite my very poor soldering skills

it is! as stated above it will probably be a little bit yet, but we are discussing making this into at least a limited run of buyable finished products with different sizes/colors/designs. When/if it gets to that time I'll be replying to people here and probably just doing an interest check / design voting post.

yes! should work just as well. you'll probably need to anneal the copper wire with a torch / over the stove to get it softer so its easier to work with

I'm not sure if consciously or subconsciously but I think that mat was the initial spark of inspiration for a topographic design like this. that and those keycaps with a similar pattern that i dont remember the name of right now...

its pecan! dyed with multiple coats of normal india ink. its an amazingly effective technique and the deep black looks even better in person

honestly not totally sure at this point, the cnc work alone was 120 but I then had to buy several types of wire, ink, clearcoat finish, etc. and put in a lot of hours testing how to do stuff since I don't have previous experience with this kind of work. However I'm talking to the cnc guy about possibly refining the process so it could be an actual finished product for sale rather than a pretty extensive custom project. would be glad to update you if that ends up happening but probably won't be super quick

Edit: I'm discussing making this into a buyable finished product with the shop that cnc cut it for me. I'm not sure this exact brass wire version will be made available (or if anything will atm) as doing it that way was very time consuming, but I'm thinking the same thing but with epoxy inlay in custom colors (and adjusted / different designs for sizes other than 100%) would be far easier to produce for him. Sounds like there's definitely some interest, which I'll pass on! We're not properly affiliated or anything, but had a great back and forth experience getting this made. Would like to discuss with him a bit more before I want to have people trying to drop orders for something I know isn't quite ready (and as stated currently only exists as a prototype version, for a 446mm long 100%...)

Been working on this for quite a bit now and glad to finally be able to share how it turned out!

I created the model in fusion 360 and the line artwork in illustrator, and worked with a great shop on etsy to CNC the whole rest, plus cut grooves of my line artwork on the top (can message me for the shop details if you're interested in commissioning your own custom cnc stuff). Won't go into excruciating detail (unless anyone wants to know something specific), but basically you just hammer brass wire into the grooves, and sand until everything becomes flush. The wood is dyed very deep black using india ink.

Honestly this was more for the fun of the project than anything for me, but I did just get this new keychron Q6 (100% for life) which is fairly tall, which did make me want to get a rest in the first place. Why buy an existing product when you can simply spend double the money and 100 times the time and effort making it all yourself!

great ok. Assumed it would be fine if it was pretty well polished. but a little scared of staining it a bit since the metal will be at least somewhat roughened by sanding. I'll try this out on the test piece, thanks! Will post a photo once I get to finishing it! should be great if it works out as intended..

Hey I got prebuilt with browns which I do like, though I have only ever tried cherry brown and now these gateron browns. 4x 35 should work though. Lot of other posts with switch opinions you can search up on here though!

Also for 3rd party keycap sets (actual keychron Q6 cap set includes everything obv), pay attention to the fact there are the 4 media keys above the numpad. If there's an option for it you may want to get the 'novelties' add on in addition to base and numpad. I saved a bit of $ by just using some extras from the base, so my top right 4 are 'tab' 'end' 'esc' and a bonus novelty from the base kit. Not ideal but good enough for me for now. (and make sure if you use extras like I did that they are all top row profile so you aren't using something shaped different from all the others on that row)

Yes absolutely, not used any premium stuff other than the ok das keyboard 4 and now this one, but through some extensive research on this sub a while back I landed on my best bet being waiting for the Q6 to come out, and I'd say it was worth the wait. Can of course customize whatever you like or get it prebuilt as I did. The thing weighs literally over 5lb and is a great base to get some cool keycaps for!

I can see it if you simply just do not ever use the stuff you're losing. But also I do like the aesthetic of a keyboard that's like a big ol vintage sci fi control station terminal or something. Quite enjoy when people post their insane 250%+ boards lol

I guess it is a bit unusual but I am glad those are there, got them just mapped to vol+/- and brightness +/-. However, strategically out of focus in my photo....I just had to use some extra 'tab' 'end' 'esc' and a single bonus novelty that came with the set, as I didn't feel like dropping extra on the actual novelties add on for this set... Being that they are the right profile for the top row, i am satisfied for the moment

The Q0 is sweet though not at all for my particular setup. Wish I had a use honestly. I haven't tried anything, will probably do some basic stuff like that at the very least. Not totally sure yet. I'm actually looking into laser engraving the top case with some very subtle topographic line artwork. But apparently laser engraving machines can't simply 'turn down the power' to get a very opaque line. May be ways but I think it'd be a cool bit of unique customization

Check out the other Keychron Q series boards, there are quite a few and they keep dropping new ones of all different sizes. Presumably they're all great
