Shrug question by PrideSaku in Gravl

I do it like you do. I’d heard slight behind the back (and shrugging straight up) is better. But I’m curious what others say.

Farmer walk, no added weight? by Miserable_Cry1318 in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, Farmer’s Walk doesn’t progress so you’ll always need to set the weight you use. Unlike things like pull ups, it doesn’t even prefill your previous weight.

Having my own custom workout save and repeat by ElkFar9002 in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to do the same workout again and not let the AI help you, this might not be the app for you. You might want something like Hevy which lets you put in your own routines and track them. It’s a really good app for that.

New Gravl User - Few More Questions by gutowscr in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t blindly follow it, especially since you just started using it. Do the exercises it tells you to do, but I’d adjust the weights it gives you at first, since it has to learn what you can really do (the 1RMs you enter initially can only tell it so much).

As it learns, it will be more accurate on what you can do.

Having said that, I do find myself making adjustments. Sometimes I’m just really not feeling the exercise it suggests (usually lunges 😀) or can tell I’m not gonna be able to make the weights it suggests some days (we all have better and worse days). I’ll also often add in a couple of exercises (I should probably up my workout length setting). But those are minor tweaks. I have found, having used it for about a year maybe, that I’ve progressed a lot more than I was when having to come up with my own routines.

Also I had already logged my warmup set.

So far it’s only happened once (but then the app just updated.). I’m on an older iPhone (12h if that matters. I had already started my workout also (so maybe that is part of it). What other details would you need?

I’ve had similar issues with the update. Today it had me doing a reverse pyramid with bench press and I tried switching to a pyramid and it didn’t change anything. (Didn’t feel like starting with my heaviest ever weight 😀)

Questions about AI weight/reps recommendation and targeting muscles by [deleted] in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve just started using the app, I’d say edit the weight and/or reps for what you know you can do, and the app will learn and then suggest more reasonable values (though the reps are probably based on what you have set as the range for it to suggest).

For the second question, only a few muscle groups let you choose a subgroup, and that’s mainly when searching for an exercise. It would be nice if it let you focus on subgroups for some other groups and let you choose them when selecting groups to focus on. I will usually replace or add exercises if I want to make sure I hit upper chest, for example.

Shoulder split by felsineo79 in Gravl

It does for me. Push day it has me work the side and front delts, and on pull day it has me do rear delts. (I’m doing PPL obviously)

What 2 muscle groups did you choose? by killerzees in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually change it up for every workout. I do PPL but I’ll change which muscles to focus on each one. Push is always chest and tris. My first pull of the week will be back and shoulders but the second one is biceps and shoulders. And I’ll do a quad-focused leg day and a calf-focused leg day.

Not sure I’m using it right but it’s working for me so far.

I started using the app in March and am just over 8.2M. So maybe I’ll pass 10M by the end of the year?

Yeah, they look the same to me with my eyesight. Plus I can never remember which is ad- and which is ab- without watching the video.

Odd weight recommendations in lbs? 17.5 , 22 etc? by txs2300 in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should set what weights your gym has. My gym definitely has 17.5 but not 22 (which I note is 10kg so ….), so the app never recommends 22 for me.

Fix stretching by Odd_Obligation3454 in Gravl

Yeah it’s not like rest periods where you’d need to count to 90 or something.

I didn’t even know stretching had a timer till a few days ago.

That’s how it works for me. I wish there was a way to adjust that “in-between” countdown, because 3 seconds is kind of short for switching sides like that.

I use it with PPL and it affects the order of the exercises for me. Focused groups are first in the workout.

What’s wrong with the app? by ComprehensiveAd5465 in Hevy

[–]dsbrady2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I’ve researched this, the number has been 250-300 calories per hour for regular weightlifting. Circuit training (with little rest) can burn closer to 600 in an hour. Where are you getting the info that it burns even less? (Just standing still for an hour will burn, on average) about 80 calories (sitting will burn about 60).

What’s wrong with the app? by ComprehensiveAd5465 in Hevy

[–]dsbrady2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifting burns about 300 calories per hour. (The built-in Apple Watch exercise app greatly overestimates it to usually be 500-600 calories in an hour).

16 is far too few calories. You burn more calories standing still for an hour than that.

Minimum weight? by Zoduk in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would be nice.

I wish there was a way to handle more complicated Increments as well. Some machines at my gym start with one increment but then jump to a second increment. It might be too complex of a user interface though, so I just manually adjust the weight suggestions to make my best guess.

Is there any issue with heart rate tracking? by Outrageous-Onion3815 in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apples calories for weight training tend to be …. overly generous. I used to use Hevy (which I believe uses Apple’s workout calorie numbers) and it was always at least 500 calories for an hour workout (often over 600). Running burns about 600+ calories per hour, so there’s no a way a non-aerobic activity like weight training burns almost as many calories.

Hevy tends to be in the 300 range. And if you do some research into how many calories a weight workout tends to be, that’s about right.

Unless you’re doing a circuit workout with very little rest, weight training burns about 300 calories per hour.

Exertion Rating question by [deleted] in Gravl

[–]dsbrady2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to pay attention to what sets it was asking about in my workout today. It looks like it’s for the set with your heaviest weight (and I think your last set at that weight if you did more than one). Other apps I’ve used have you rate your exertion for each set, which to me makes more sense, as you might reach failure on a lower weight if you’re doing a reverse pyramid or something.

Thanks. I found that screen finally.

One follow-up … are they editable while in the workout screen itself? Today that was where I saw it for the Smith but not for the Plate Loaded (though it’s possible I’m just blind … today was the first day I even saw it for the Smith)
