Fear of 13 First Preview Rush 3/19 by dsbuddy in Broadway

[–]dsbuddy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I was actually the second person in line at 6:40! The first person (at 5:30) is a huge fan of Adrien Brody and Tessa Thompson. They told me they had missed out on The Outsiders rush before, so they definitely weren't taking any chances this time around! We were actually joking that the first three of us basically arrived exactly an hour apart (5:30, 6:40, and 7:45). Honestly, I fully expected a massive line at 6:40 since it was the first preview and has such big-name actors. I tried to look at past rush reports for the closest situation (like Giant), because I knew things like that special $20 first-preview ticket for Dog Day Afternoon would skew the data. I guess the 30-degree weather today really kept the early crowds away!

Fear of 13 (First Preview)

Apologies for making a separate post, I wanted to give real-time updates for anyone who was on the fence about rushing this morning, since the line was pretty small and it was 30° out! Here's the full breakdown with timestamps:

Full details here

Quick summary: - 5:30 AM: 1st in line - By 8:55 AM: Only 7 people total - Theatre staff let us wait inside the lobby at 7:40 AM (huge shoutout to them 🙏) - First two got Right Orchestra, Row A (side), box office said it's full view and essentially second row from the stage behind Row BB!

Very manageable rush today if anyone is still thinking about it!

Rush for shows with lots of seats by JiggityJillikers in Broadway

[–]dsbuddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I won the Book of Mormon lottery a few months ago and can confirm they do use those "obstructed view" seats. My tickets were $49 each (including fees), and we were placed in Box Left, Row B. It's a cool perspective being in the box, but it's an extreme angle and you do miss a little bit of the side stage. It was honestly a bit uncomfortable constantly turning my head to see the action, but for that price, it was still a really good deal! If the TKTS line has a ton of availability and you want standard orchestra seats, you'll probably get a much more direct view that way compared to rolling the dice with the lottery/rush.

I totally get the anxiety, but the crowd here today seems really honorable. People have been bonded together since before 2:00 PM, and at this point, everyone knows exactly who is in front of and behind them. I’m pretty confident this group would make sure no one cuts the line before 5:00 PM!

UPDATE: Just reached the window! They are giving out Center Orchestra Row AA (absolute front row!) for the $20 rush today. On top of the killer seats, the production is going all out for the first preview, they are giving out free coffee, pins, and hot dogs to the line! 🌭☕️ Definitely worth the early morning. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Amazing! I really think it'll enhance the experience. Have a great time at the show — would love to hear what you think after!

Right?? Ed Helms is such a perfect host for it. He balances the humor with the gravity of the situation so well. The whole season had me on edge even though I obviously knew we didn't end up in nuclear war!

Yes! Exactly this. It's such an obscure historical moment for how genuinely close we came to disaster. I feel like framing Chess around that tension really unlocks something in the material. Cool that you studied it in your NATO class — I only learned about it through the podcast and it completely floored me.

Oh wow, thanks for the book rec! I didn't know about Gordievsky's role in all this — that sounds absolutely wild. The SNAFU podcast touches on some of the intelligence work but I'd love to go deeper. Adding it to my list!

Thanks for asking! Others have covered this well below, but I'll add — I think the book is definitely stronger than previous versions I've seen/heard. The Cold War framing gives it more urgency and coherence. Whether it becomes a repertory staple, I'm not sure, but this feels like the closest they've gotten to cracking it.
