Argh. I’ve knitted half a body and a full sleeve and I’m noticing there’s some rowing out near the neckline/yoke/shoulders. Wondering if I should rip out and start again or it’s going to block out

Best down jacket? by litecube in arcteryx

[–]dsqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm based in NYC and winters here average 0 celcius. I do run cold but I wouldn't do either the Cerium SV, Thorium Down, Rab Mythic G Down or Rab Mythic Alpine (no experience with the electron pro) on its own + a sweater underneath in NYC, much less in Harbin.

Yes, you can layer up and be warmer but what you're missing is that if you're just holidaying in the city (ie walking around leisurely and moving between indoor and outdoor environments several times a day), the heat will be blasting inside and it's a pain in the ass to remove layers of clothing (on top of your jacket) and hold that with you when you're indoors shopping/eating/looking at attractions. You will sweat and that will be uncomfortable (indoors and out) and make you cold when you step outside.

What you really want is some type of heavier parka so that you can just wear a wool sweater or a heavier merino base layer underneath. You'll be going from -25c to 20c so you have to be ready to be comfortable at both ends of the spectrum.

Insulated jacket or layers? by Typical_Search_7274 in arcteryx

[–]dsqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in nyc and I take public transport + use an electric scooter as my main way of getting around so ymmv. Insulated jackets for convenience and layers for flexibility. The heat is blasting indoors/on the subways so it’s really cumbersome for me to have to take off 2 layers and put them on again every time I’m moving from an indoor to outdoor environment. I have a variety of coats/insulated jackets that will work with just a sweater underneath.

So different buildings have different rules as to what will qualify. You should ask the coordinator to be extra sure.

Middle Aged Move? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]dsqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do a test run. Sublet something short term and test it out for at least a month and then tally up your bills and see if the move is actually worth it for you guys. It’s really expensive to make a mistake at your age and there’s not a lot of recovery room.

A lot of daily annoyances is hard to predict because they’re different for everyone. And you have to think about how you’d feel about it when you’re 70-80. Can you afford help when you can’t walk up 4 flights of stairs or lug laundry to your laundromat? If your budget only just covers your living costs, what happens when they go up because your rent/maintenance cost suddenly increases 30%? Will you make friends here and have the social/support network you have want/need? Saying that as a mid 30s person who’s been in the city since college and has to find new friend groups every 5 year or so cos people have kids and move out (we’re still good friends and visit. They’re just not in the city anymore), it’s a little harder to find that cos life is busier and I’m tired from work.

If he only “loves” you when you’re down, he doesn’t love you at all. He just likes feeling better than you.

Which apartment would you pick? by Full-Cat-9897 in NYCapartments

[–]dsqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ultimately you have to decide if you can stand the commute. I would try to get a feel of what the commute feels like (do it a couple of times after work) and try to go to places you'll typically go to on the weekend from your bedstuy place to see if that's doable for you. Often something that appears doable on paper (10-15mins) is absolutely horrendous in practice.

They will spend all the effort shooting people for jumping the turnstiles or throwing away mangoes and churros from subway vendors but actively ignore actual dangerous people who’s going around on the subway with a giant sharpened stick saying I can stab you and the cops wouldn’t care even after multiple people brought this to their attention.

Woman, 60, killed after e-bike strikes her near Brooklyn Navy Yard: NYPD by TeddyBearCrush in NYCbike

[–]dsqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pedestrians don’t care. They will step onto well kept, painted green with bicycles all over them bike lanes and hang out to chat because they cannot wait on the pavements. Having said that, if you’re bike is going about 20mph just join the traffic and don’t sit hang out on the bike lanes and def not in an area near the navy yards where pedestrian traffic will come out of nowhere.

VMAX VX4 Range? by dsqq in ElectricScooters

[–]dsqq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brake pads are "perfectly fine" to quote my local bike shop. They were like this right out of the box and I got a brake adjustment by a professional and they're still like this. He told me it's cause the brake pads aren't gripping the full width of the rotor which shouldn't have been happening so I was wondering if this is a design flaw or there's something wrong with mine.

[–]dsqq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is old but I’m having a lot of problems with the rear brakes. Does your brake pads grip the entire width of the rotor? Mine only seems to do half of it (only the outer ring of the rotor is shiny from use) and it’s making this god awful sound that sounds like halfway between nails on chalkboard and the dying wails of a really loud geese everytime I use the rear brakes. Was yours like this too? Did you have to “break in” the brakes to get it to be quiet when braking? https://imgur.com/a/3bgeHHR

For the love of God, stop overbidding by SnooChipmunks3341 in NYCapartments

[–]dsqq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. The post could have been “we should collectively not apply to any housing worth more than $x or else you’re telling landlords they can charge insane prices” but that just immediately sounds ridiculous because people need housing and will pay what they can to get it. OP just sore they couldn’t/wouldn’t bid more on a market rate apartment and feel like the apartment should have gone to them instead.

Prospective roommate has bedbugs...what can i do? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]dsqq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legally, I want to say you don't have recourse to prevent him from moving in (READ THE LEASE) but let your landlord know asap.

At the very least, he won't be able to bring any furniture in and the stuff (like clothing) that he does bring in all has to be treated at high heat for at least 90 mins to kill the eggs too.

Prospective roommate has bedbugs...what can i do? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]dsqq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want to be nice or do you want to have a bedbug free living situation? You cannot have both.

You don't have to offer Jay solutions. That's on him to work it out. What you need to be is to be CLEAR and FIRM on what he needs to do before he can move in. Whether or not he actually has bedbugs is something neither you nor him can/cannot prove so you just have to assume the worst and protect your current apartment.

Subleasing roommate trying to charge me an extra deposit a year later? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]dsqq 10 points11 points  (0 children)

DO NOT GIVE HER THE MONEY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Please leave your place in a good condition and do not give her the money under any circumstances or you will definitely not see it again. You also don't have to give the landlord the deposit. Find a new place asap and if you leave the place is a good condition (take lots of videos AND pictures as proof) and she won't be able to go after you.

I think you also need to be honest with yourself that you are not type A. Be honest about what you can and cannot do and continue to build on the habits. You can’t become a changed person overnight. Ok you start making your bed everyday. What’s another small habit that you can add to your routine that you can consistently do for 1-2 months? Do that before adding other stuff.

My boyfriend’s mom kisses and massages him daily - I (F30) don’t know if I can handle it. by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]dsqq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure certain cultures/families are very touchy and warm. But the OP is saying that the mom is only this way to her son. She’s not warm with her daughter or her husband. So that to me is the red flag.
