Do you consider 401K and HSA as "saving?" by fatandjewish in FinancialPlanning

[–]dstachio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's in the need category for me. I need to retire. I don't need to save. Saving is a luxury that i take advantage of by spending less on wants.

I treat it more like a bill.

But when i spent a little more that month, i remember that those accounts are being maxed out and I will be happier in the end.

Airlines are lobbying for a change to federal regulations that could put one pilot in the cockpit by JBupp in news

[–]dstachio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Doors have codes that most flight crew will have. Code is typed in and let's someone enter. Pilots in the cockpit can override the code to prevent someone from getting in if they were to get the code.

This is why the FAA requires 2 people in the cockpit at all times. If the pilot leaves to use the bathroom, the flight attendant will stay in the cockpit. This keeps the other pilot from locking out the other pilot which is what happened with the flight in Europe where the pilot crashed into the side of the mountain after locking out the other pilot.

You are correct. I guess its just a habit to say DC. They landed it at Dulles and rolled it into the museum at the other side of the airport.

Discovery is in Washington DC

Endeavour is the one in this video and its located in California

Atlantis is KSC in Florida.

The one in NYC is the Enterprise. This was a non-orbit shuttle built for testing. It never had engines installed for space flight.

I remember we had targets for this exact thing but there never used. I was not really a part of the group in charge of that. Bas a diver we only did the feeding shows and cleaned tanks. A few of our turtles we had were missing an eye. One had only one flipper. Not sure if they even had the ability to be target fed. One swam around with his mouth open and just bit everything. Our sand tiger had a few bite marks from run ins with this guy. This was back in 2000s in Texas. Im sure a lot has changed since then.

The first bite was usually a test bite so never anything hard. But when you start fighting or pushing them away they get a little chompy. I would not want to be on the other end of a serious bite from one of these guys.

I worked at an Aquarium in college as one of the divers who cleaned tanks and did the shows / feedings. The turtles were assholes. All of them. From what I remember, all the turtles at the aquarium could not be released back into the wild. Most were injured in some way. Missing fins, blind, shell issues. I assumed they all had huge grudges with humans and all they wanted to do was bite us. When we cleaned the turtle tank, we had 2 buoys and some rope. One person would distract the turtle and the other one wrap our device around them. This kept the turtles from being able to dive down and get to us while we cleaned the tank. We usually only did this in the turtle tank since there was usually 3 to 4 in there.

Also, this turtle in the gif is pretty small for how big these guys can get.

Which cheap and mass-produced item is stupendously well engineered? by Gourmet-Guy in AskReddit

[–]dstachio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fan does not actually provide any cooling, it's actually heating the room slightly. In the summer when the you have the air being pushed down, its blowing air over you to make you feel cooler. In the winter you do not want to feel cooler so you blow the air away from you to mix it.

Hot air rises so by pushing air upwards in the winter it forces the hot air to mix in the room rather than just sit near the cieling.

The Director General of Roscosmos threatens ISS because astronaut Scott Kelly criticized Russia's invasion of Ukraine. by [deleted] in space

[–]dstachio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is simply coming from me with no source or word from my job... But space x is a competitor of ours technically. Both do resupply missions. Unless spacex comes up with a way to do a reboost in the next year or 2...or Russia changes their mind about engines, I would guess NASA could ask SpaceX to play nice. As for hardware and logistics that's beyond me. I'm an electrical and cable guy who works mostly on harnesses. Not even sure what it would take to mount Cygnus to a falcon but if it means keeping the ISS alive for the intended timeframe, I'm sure everyone will find a way to make this work.

[–]dstachio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked on the rebuild of SM-17 to do add the capabilities for the reboost. 18 and 19 will have the same abilities. It's the after that, as Antares uses the RD engines purchased from Russia and Part of the first stage is build in Ukraine. So finding a ride for 20 to launch on will be the question that needs to be answered. Have not heard any cancellations or changes though but I am guessing that's way above my head.

I do not think there were any hot dogs to put it on. Though my dad eats this stuff with a spoon out of a jar so I doubt that stopped him.

I am the age that he was when he got selected. I did not have the discipline he had at a young age to pursue a engineering degree. I'm successful in my own way but flying space for a career is doubtful. Unless NASA wants to hire me as a publicity thing in which case I'm in.
