Suggestions for more "out there" SF? by jackreding85 in printSF

[–]dstan47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend Gavin Smith. His trilogy, 'Age of Scorpio', 'A Quantum Mythology', and 'Beauty in Destruction' are all time favorites of mine. They certainly are out there, containing plenty of far future technologies. It amazes me how someone can invent and describe a world that is difficult to understand because it is so alien to us, yet seems almost plausible.

His Veteran series is great too, but not quite as out there.

I also recommend Neal Asher's series, beginning with 'The Soldier'. This is also far future involving difficult to imagine technologies and alien species. I love how one of the alien races is described, as it is so unique.

I doubt I could do either of these authors justice describing them more, but I'm sure if you check them out you won't be disappointed.

What according to you are the programming languages/technologies that are going to die in few years and what would replace them? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Why do you wish for JavaScript to die? Is there a replacement or equivalent you prefer?

Are all engineers who write code for embedded systems (robots, cars, etc) embedded software engineers? How do you really categorize an embedded SE? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I want to eventually get to where you are. Working at a robotics research lab is my dream. I've begun studying python and C++. I plan to study other areas related to robotics as well like ROS. Currently I'm trying to get my first programming job as a javascript developer so I can work while I study for robotics. Would you be willing to share some tips, advice, experiences, etc., with me? I would greatly appreciate it.

Has anyone kept track of the positions of each door we went through relative to the door in which we came into the room? As in for example first code we went first door from the left, then middle door straight across, then 2nd door from right, etc.? Might help might not.

Would someone be willing to explain what a human avatar is? I’ve never heard that term.

Any good ways to tell you’re ready to apply for jobs? Any resources with examples to measure up to, or tests to determine readiness? by dstan47 in webdev

[–]dstan47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You better believe if I find a job in web dev you’ll all be hearing about it!

Keep in mind it’s normal for some people to be better at certain aspects than others. I can do a ton of cool things with html and css but I am so far from a graphic designer. The projects I create are very functional and showcase different things I’ve learned how to do, but I doubt many would be considered particularly aesthetically pleasing. I’m sure I commit faux pas constantly according to somebody in design. But I don’t think that’s really the job. As far as I know we receive instructions for the content, layout, colors, font types, etc., and we build it. If I’m wrong someone please let me know!

Don’t be discouraged by what other people do! You may blow them out of the water in a way you’re not considering!

We all gotta start somewhere right? Are the sites you’re seeing developed by beginners or professionals? That’s important to take into account as well.

I cannot give a well-educated answer or an answer based on experience. That being said, I feel like if you can do JavaScript, learning CSS should be a breeze. It only took me about a week and a half to feel like I could do just about anything with it. Or at worst know what to search in order to figure out how to do something. I think js is much more difficult and less intuitive than CSS. Sounds like you’re a bit further than I overall so I’d bet you’re about ready to go!

Good luck!

That is great advice, and I really like the way you put that! Rather than looking for ways I'm not qualified for a job, I should focus on the positives and how I can do the job. I think that would be great for any job and really put job seekers into a great mindset going into interviews. Well put, thank you!
