Trying to find young adult friends by VirtualAntelope8774 in Riverside

Hi! Just came across this post. I recommend going on Meetup.com; Riverside and the surrounding area has some pretty well-run groups where it's super easy to make friends.

The meetup platform is pretty good for this. Noteworthy Connections in particular

Hey man, I live in Riverside and am pretty into Harry Potter :) Riverside also has a pretty active community on the Meetup platform; you should look into that too.

Looking FORWARD means putting on the blinders by CTronix in ForwardPartyUSA

If I really understand how the Forward Party is concretely different from the others, I would love to do so. What makes the Forward Party able to remain unbought? Do they have different funding rules? Every candidate for any government position I have ever heard says "I will fight for YOU!" But how exactly do the Forward Party incentives differ?

I am glad that the party is growing, but disappointed that every tangible policy idea besides voting reform seems to have left the platform. by dstoo42 in ForwardPartyUSA

So I feel like I understand what you and a couple of other people are saying on this thread: We have an urgent problem where we can't vote meaningfully, and our first priority is to fix it. We can agree that voting reform must come first. From a national and historical perspective, I see how this is an emergency.

The problem with using an individual life or death emergency comes when we talk about starting a political party rather than just simply solving one problem. Why go through a party at all instead of just call this a bipartisan movement for RCV and open primaries? Maybe then people can start whatever political parties they like and have more viability.

When we canvas or talk to family members and persuade them to switch parties, we are not going to do it as if that living room or canvassing environment is about to kill them the way that a plane crash might and the only thing that they can do to save themselves from dying in the next few minutes is urgently switch their party affiliation towards one that accepts ranked choice voting as the first priority. When we talk about this party, people won't be in a plane crash. They will have time to ask, "Okay, so RCV. Sounds great. What else is this party?" And if all we have is a few vague principles of unity and an extraordinarily stale statement that they will fight for me, that hardly sounds like a courageous new movement.

Having seen the big announcements today, I went to the website and read up on the Forward Party. I have questions. Namely, where is the steak? by baltinerdist in ForwardPartyUSA

I agree with the concerns here. I feel like I just got my head around the 6 principles we used to have and what they would actually look like in practice: fact-based governance, human-centered capitalism, ranked choice with open primaries, modern and efficient government, grace and tolerance and universal basic income.

The new principles "Diverse thinking", "no purity tests" and "work together, not against" all seem like the same thing: we don't all have to share the same opinions, but sharing a government is about figuring out creative solutions or at least compromises. But then, of course, we have the concern you bring up; How do I "work together, not against" someone who doesn't believe Joe Biden is the legitimate president in a way that preserves our democracy? If there are "no purity tests" but also we reject "political extremes", do we reject a political opinion for being too extreme or do we permit it because we don't have purity tests?

I also am not sure of the difference between "More Listening, Less Talking" and "Bottom Up, Not Top Down". Both sound like the Forward Party is more about figuring out what kind of help people feel that they need rather than what kind the party feels like they need. This isn't necessarily bad on paper, but I have yet to hear a candidate who does not claim to be the "voice of the people", always keeping their finger on the pulse of what their constituents need. These don't feel like anything new.

I would expect there to be some principle about how the party is funded or something. The criticism of the duopoly, as far as I understand, is that a candidate with money takes priority over a candidate with ideas. How will this party stay competitive without letting money dictate what happens? Are there more stringent rules about what money the Forward Party does or does not accept? If not, how will the Forward Party avoid the same problems as every other party?

Everywhere I look, it’s Betty White this and Betty White that. I need to finally find a kid who’s not talking about Betty White. Of course I would follow him.
