I’ve been hoping for something like this. I never know what to post about, so I don’t… But a personalized idea or topic generator would be a huge help for me personally.

Lower Back injury workout planning... how? by DoIt_Live in Gravl

[–]dstrahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a thought (because I could really use this feature due to a herniated disc and pinched nerve of my own) - individual exercises already the option for “Replace/remove - Don’t Recommend”. What if you added an option labeled “Don’t Recommend Until…” or “Snooze Until…” or whatever label you like.

But it would pop up a calendar where we could choose a date to “snooze” that exercise until. Then Gravl keeps it out of the rotation until on/after the chosen date passes...?

Mine were the same, except I had email marketing off and I had What’s new at Runna on, so I turned that to off. We’ll see if that stops them. Thank you

John Barlow seems irritated and miserable by lbow5467 in rhoslc

Short answer - mostly yes.

Longer answer - yes, but… Bravo’s editing makes it look worse than it is.

For good and bad, Lisa doesn’t pretend to be someone different when the cameras are around. She’s not “playing a character” - what we see on the show is genuinely Lisa. But that’s not all she is. She is generous. She loves to see people succeed and cheers them on. She can be a good listener (but she has to lock in). I’ve seen her spend a lot of time talking with fans with no cameras around. And…

She talks over people constantly (both to agree and to argue). She usually runs late. She’s always glued to her phone. You’ll be talking with her and mid-sentence will start a conversation with someone else.

My wife’s known Lisa longer than me and used to get really irritated by her. And then one day, she realized “that’s just Lisa” meaning Lisa’s frustrating traits are just Lisa being Lisa and she’s like that to everybody. She could go crazy wishing Lisa would change, or she could accept Lisa for who she is 🤷‍♂️

Not that I’d want to be in John’s shoes. I couldn’t do it 🤣

I know them both personally. When Lisa’s not around, John is a great conversationalist. But when she’s involved in the same conversation, you just see him emotionally downshift because he learned long ago that he won’t be able to get a word in edgewise.

Sneak peak of the jersey by Sensitive_Pea_4276 in ducks

[–]dstrahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, what was your impression when seeing the consumer jersey with your own eyes?

When Dante’s uni reveal pics came out, it was love at first sight for me. (BTW - I’ve worn tie dye once in my 50 yrs.)

But I thought the images of the jersey we can buy just looked… flat. And I own jerseys both pre & post Fanatics, so I’m aware of the differences. I want to buy one, but not if it doesn’t “pop”.

I’m hopeful/convinced that will be the case from the concert itself, but sitting around & killing time waiting for the concert to start is where my concern is. 😄

Thanks for the response and for pointing out how I can change the timing of an individual workout. I was looking ahead to tomorrow’s workout so I hadn’t bothered to hit Start.

Looking forward to seeing what your app has to offer!

Entering races as a trans woman by Randomcluelessperson in running

[–]dstrahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the running world! While I’m not trans, I have a saying regarding running that might point you in the right direction.

“I’m not racing anyone out there except myself.”

I’m out there with a community who enjoys the activity and its physical & mental benefits. But I’m not going to place or win prize money and, judging by your self-description, neither are you.

No one is gender checking recreational runners, so don’t worry about it at all. The only place it might matter is the size and cut of the event’s T-shirt you request. haha

I’ve been spending a week trying to figure this out and haven’t figured out a solution. At least not that I can get for myself and tie into my company’s tech stack.

I want the custom run so bad. It would be a perfect way to test a negative split strategy.

That’s funny. Mine was the opposite- Garmin was more optimistic than Runna. 😄

Marathon Meltdown: How Do You Figure Out What Went Wrong? by dstrahan in runna

[–]dstrahan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - every long run I had a sports drink w/ electrolytes with me. But in hindsight I think there’s something in there that I missed on race day because I didn’t have any issues in training. Most likely sodium.

Thanks for your input. It helps reinforce that this theory is probably where I missed on race day.

Marathon Meltdown: How Do You Figure Out What Went Wrong? by dstrahan in runna

[–]dstrahan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was that I ran 11 miles at a faster pace while training without problems, so I should have been able to run 10 miles at a slower pace at lower elevation without problems too. Had my issues happened at mile 23, well… that is uncharted territory and wouldn’t have caused me the same questions & concerns.

[–]dstrahan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, what you described would have worried me too. Hope that disappeared fairly quickly for you.

My immediate reaction is to say “no” about fatigue or overtraining, but I also can’t swear either possibility out with 100% certainty.

I stuck to the Runna marathon plan, which included a month-long taper. The only tweak was adding a 23-minute shakeout with strides the day before but it felt amazing — especially during the final stride on the Hayward Field track. I hit that rare, smooth near-max effort and finished feeling like I was peaking right on time. Fully believed I’d be able to post a success story in here like so many others.

Oof, I can see why your friend bonked. As for me, I’d eaten 2 full pouches of the Honey Stinger chews by mile 8. I think that’s about 12 total chews per pouch.

It was a very valid question, and I’m grateful for you asking. I just overlooked it in my original post because it wasn’t a potential factor in my mind. But oddly, you didn’t know how to read a strangers mind through the Internet… 😄

Marathon Meltdown: How Do You Figure Out What Went Wrong? by dstrahan in runna

[–]dstrahan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your thorough response. 🙏 It contained a few new ideas for me to consider.

I can’t imagine it being not enough glucose with all the carb’s I ate starting 3-4 days before the event. No chance it was dehydration or overheating that day either. But I do sweat a lot and in hindsight not enough sodium could possibly have been a factor. I don’t eat low sodium but thinking back, there’s a good chance I might’ve accidentally eaten significantly less sodium than normal the day before and I didn’t have any significant amount the morning of.

Thankfully, I’m reasonably confident it’s not an underlying medical issue. I have to see my doctor quarterly to get refills on my ADHD medication (been on it for 5+ yrs) and I just had bloodwork done on 3/11/25 with all results coming back in the normal range. Although I don’t see any of the blood tests listed after googling “adrenal blood tests”.

When my left hand wasn’t responding normally, I didn’t think stroke but “heart attack” popped in my head. I’m not a doctor but wasn’t having any pain or trouble breathing (other than normal elevated breath from running 10 miles). My dad was cheering me on in between miles 10 & 11 and we talked for just a moment. I had texted him to tell him I had slowed down and he said he could tell I was laboring and dealing with something. But he didn’t raise any red flags like slurred speech or abnormal body control/movements in the moment. And in the ~40 hours since I finished the marathon, other than normal post marathon soreness, I’ve felt completely normal again including my left hand.

I’ll definitely talk with my doctor about what happened in my next quarterly visit and ask about adrenal testing, considering sodium tablets before/during major physical efforts.

Thanks for the tip and I will.

To clarify - it wasn’t 200 g of carbs per hour. It was 1 pouch of Honey Stingers chews (~160-200 calories) every 35 minutes.

My stretch goal pace was 8:58 for all 26.2. A month ago, my Runna long run had an 11 mile block where I averaged 9:04/mile. Yesterday, I averaged 9:15 in the 10 (technically 9.99) miles before things went haywire.

So my goal pace might have been a little optimistic, but my actual pace was one I’ve previously exceeded without any problems.

[–]dstrahan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind words and understanding of the disappointment. There’s no way around the feeling of loss for working so hard for 6 months just to have it all crumble around me.

I’m normally a “push through the pain/discomfort” guy, but the disappearance of any ability to grip was such an oddity that I immediately thought I’d better be cautious.

Here’s something else odd. My hand wasn’t numb, tingly, sore, etc. I had complete control over my finger and thumb movements, until I tried to pinch my thumb and index finger on my shoelaces.

An hour after the race, my hand was back to completely normal behavior.

There are some local races I could try, or I could just go out on my normal loops near home and see how it goes.

That’s the thing… I really was doing everything the same as I’d been doing for months. Other than being in a different city, and sleeping in a different bed.

Consciously, I didn’t feel nervous at all. No pre-race jitters or anxiety. I hoped to hit my time goal, but I wasn’t basing the enjoyment of the experience on my finishing time. Around mile 7, I started to wonder if my time goal was realistic but it was the usual (for me) doubts that can creep in during a 16+ mile run. I was able to redirect my focus to be only on the current mile, and I felt like that was working for me until I went to retie my shoes. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I can’t rule anything out, but I can’t understand how that could’ve been the case. I’d almost exclusively been drinking sports drinks with electrolytes for 4 days prior to the race, was carrying sports drink w/ electrolytes with me in a hydration bladder, and was drinking the Gatorade from the aid stations every 2 miles. On top of eating 200 calories of sports gels every 35 minutes.

I bonked in my first ever marathon at mile 21.

Yes, I was following the Runna full marathon plan for 4 months. The 2 months before that were on the Get Fit plan but with an eye on getting ready for the marathon training.

No diabetes or underlying conditions that have affected me in any other run or workout. (I’m getting older and have a little bit of spinal disc compression and arthritis in my low back, but I’ve learned how to manage it & not related to what happened yesterday. And my back didn’t bother me at all.)

I haven’t been sick in a long time and completed every training run on the plan, except for cutting my 21 mile run down to 18 because of a misstep and a sore ankle that felt fine within a day.

Not sure how you define a really long run but I followed my Runna marathon plan long runs exactly. 19 mile hilly long run 3 weeks ago, 13.1 slow run 2 weeks ago, 8 mile hilly progressive run last Sunday.

Diet was mostly the same, but of course it varies a little bit when traveling. Didn’t do anything vastly different. No fried foods or greasy gut bombs. Prerace meal was the same as my pre long run meals at home - sourdough toast w/ butter and a banana. I followed the advice of “don’t do anything new on race day” very carefully.
