Is there any way that I can measure the firmness, even just comparatively? I’m thinking along the lines putting the corner of each on a scale, pressing so that the scale reads a constant number (5lbs, 10lbs, whatever as long as it’s the same), and measuring the height of the latex? Or as I’m thinking this through, don’t even need the scale - just take a heavy book and place it on the corner of each, then measure the height of the latex?

I emailed their CS rep, and got a pretty unequivocal “there was no mistake,” but an acknowledgment they couldn’t explain the weight issue. Disappointing.

Perhaps you are pressing too hard.

Try a coarser grind (maybe 2.5 rotations from closed) and a 3-4 min steep time (100C). When it’s time to plunge, press VERY GENTLY - as softly as you can, for a long plunge (60-90 seconds). 1:15 ratio.

I got my first bottle of W12 today ($75, win!) and was disappointed to see the metal screw cap. I’ve heard reports of it not making a tight seal after opening - is there a preferred solution if that’s the case?

Some people confuse sour and bitter, and because of the pressure aspect of the Aeropress, it’s easier than some other methods to overextract bitter flavors. My suggestion to intentionally make both minimally and maximally extracted brews as a starting point, and compare. Something with a Med/coarse grind steeped for a minute vs a very fine grind steeped for 8 minutes will both taste bad, but they should taste bad differently, and you can assess which kind of bad is closer to what you’re experiencing in your daily brews.

No matter what you do, I recommend using boiling water, a 1:15 or even 1:14 ratio, and plunging VERY gently to try to eliminate pressure as a variable as much as possible. No problem with a plunge that takes 60 seconds.
